Can a potential new employer find out you've been put on a PIP?

I agree with the “prepare a good wholesome reason for why you moved on” comment below.

Even if it was unfair and out of your control no perspective employer wants to hear that. XOM won’t report it, the most damage would come from you if you don’t handle the backstory well.

Since we only hire the best, our PIPd folks are better than you new company’s best folks.

I told my current employer all about the PIP and the events leading up to it. People tend to have questions when you leave a company like XOM (even though most are now understanding why). I was honest with it up front and the hiring manager thought the whole thing sounded like BS in terms of what exxon was doing to put a thin veil in front of layoffs. After a five minute discussion, it has never come up again and I've been happily employed at my new company.

@OP They probably wouldn’t care. Many corporate recruiters are well aware of the PIP system and the attrition that it drives (by design).

That said, I wouldn’t make it a talking point in an interview, especially since they’re already likely aware of it. Give a good, wholesome sounding reason about why you’re moving on and leave it at that.

Good luck.

When you provide the employment verification number, if they have your social security number, ExxonMobil will tell them two pieces of information. Are you a current employee, and if not are you eligible for rehire.

All you need to tell a potential employer is that XOM is shrinking the global workforce by 8-10% a year from 2020 to 2025 based on information published by Forbes, Reuters, and Business Insider in recent months.

2020 - 8%
2021 - 8-10%
2022 - 8-10% (est.)
2023 - 8-10% (est.)

Sum Total - up to 38% staff reduction in XOM

Any potential employer will realize that the NSI GE Model is nothing more than a disguised layoff to reduce OPEX globally.

Externally, no one really cares. People know it’s a sh!tshow purge all over O&G these days.

That is pretty bate information. Company can only provide proof of employment and dates.

This gets to the key issue with PIP. It's a layoff disguised as getting rid of poor performers.

Hopefully everyone in the industry including your potential employers have figured that out by now.

Messages like this are a telling sign. Similar to the "how many days am I required to give before I quite" and "what do I do before I resign" type questions. The majority of Exxon employees are handheld kids that don't have the experience needed to survive in today's environment of moving around jobs. They've only ever worked for one company, they aren't street smart regarding moving around and advocating for their own success and career. They sit there an wait for someone to tell them what to do and where to go.

No they aren't going to tell you got a PIP nor will they call exxon hr to talk about you. Your new potential employer will not hold ExxonMobil in some godly regard.

Yall dont worry about getting pip'd. Eventually this will be a blip in your life story that no one but you will care about. Not even exxon.

Short answer is no. Now, I'm pretty sure recruiters within the O&G industry are somewhat aware of what's going on in Exxon and could potentially deduce that if you're a recent former employee, you've been part of the "low performer" purge. That's a hypothesis though, I am aware of many former colleagues happily landing in other jobs with no issues whatsoever related to their PIP/PIL history in XOM.
