"Working" from home indeed.
And what big companies are located in FL that JW could be interested in?

Former Red Hat CEO and IBM President Jim Whitehurst has sold his home in Durham.

Quietly, in the weeks leading up to Whitehurst’s departure from IBM (NYSE: IBM), he and his wife, Lauren, sold their home located just north of Hope Valley Country Club and have headed south, property records show.

Deed records for Durham County show the four bedroom, four bathroom home, valued at $1.3 million, sold in mid-June for $2.14 million. That’s actually just under the $2.15 million purchase price when Whitehurst bought the property back in 2008. The 6,256-square-foot home was built in 1936 and sits on 1.82 acres along Dover Road south of Old Chapel Hill Road.

Whitehurst did not return a request to comment, but his Twitter profile lists his residence as Longboat Key, Florida, on the Gulf Coast. Records in Sarasota County, Florida, show Whitehurst and his wife purchased a waterfront condo in Longboat Key in April of this year for nearly $1.7 million. Property records describe the condo as being part of a 7-story high-rise.

IBM did not respond to a request to comment, but the company allowed some of its workforce to operate remotely pre-pandemic. And officials said flexibility would be key moving forward – meaning many workers will be able to work from anywhere, including a gulf-front condo.

Whitehurst led Raleigh-based Red Hat through its acquisition by IBM in 2019. He was rumored to be on the short list for the CEO seat, but longtime IBMer Arvind Krishna was promoted instead. Whitehurst was named company president, a role he held until the recent announcement that he’d be transitioning to senior advisor.

Whitehurst has made no secret of the fact that he wants to be the CEO of a mega company. And he came close before. Prior to his tenure running Red Hat, he was turned down for the CEO seat at Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL).

Whitehurst has a lot of options outside of IBM. He’s also a senior advisor at Silver Lake, a global technology investment firm with a portfolio of companies that includes Dell Technologies.

Records show the Durham home was bought by Dr. Benny Joyner Jr., chief of pediatric critical care at UNC Health, and his wife, Rebecca, a partner with Parker Poe in Raleigh.
