Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Tell me I'm not alone.

I worked for TOS at USBank for more than 20 years. The first 10 years were fine. Then they started moving me from job to job like a pawn on their giant chessboard. Assigned to managers who didn't know me to do tasks I'd never done...mastering them only to be reassigned to another position with another new boss...

Every time they reorg'd me, it was terrifyingly stressful but I got through it. Then one day I log on to what I think is a conference call and... suddenly, I have no job! It was gut wrenching. They said I'd done nothing wrong but my position had been "eliminated." What a load of cr-p! They had not even told my manager beforehand! I think I was in shock for the first month. At first it felt like a long vacation but when I met with the job consultant I couldn't bring myself to do a resume or look at job postings.

I swear I have some sort of PTSD from all the stress and uncertainty I experienced over the years. I don't want to work for another big corporation because I'm afraid it will be just like the bank. I'm too old for jobs that require physical stamina. If I retire early, I don't know if we will have enough income to make ends meet but every time I think about going back to work I get so anxious that my stomach churns. I look at the technical job postings and I don't know what I'm actually qualified to do any more. Most of my training was OTJ so I never bothered with many certifications.

I'm still angry about the way I was used up and sp-t out by people who pretended to respect me. In the end, I was just another salary they could cut so they could meet their goals and get their big bonuses. I wish I could sp-t in their faces or at least be able to know when karma gets around to them.

One of these days I hope to wake up in the morning free of this lingering anger so I can move on with my life. But I never got closure. So many people I worked with that I was not able to bid farewell. What kind of company treats someone who devotes a quarter of a lifetime like that? Humans are people, not just resources!

I'm glad I don't work there any more. A few friends who are still there tell me things are worse than ever. TOS is using off-shore call centers and software developers. US workers are stuck with so much extra work they are burning out. Rather than show the truth about project status, problems are being covered up. Management is counting on technology to solve all the issues. Good luck with that.

I'm just wondering if anyone else is feeling like me.

Any update on this? Did you find another job or just retire?

I hope all the young trainees read this. This is your future. Work your a-s off for 20+ years and be tossed out because you have been eliminated. Trainees should take all the training that they can. After two years, search for a company that values you. USB does not.

Part of keeping employees at US Bank is tearing them down so they so they never feel good enough to leave. Its a lie, the biggest lie to crush a person confidence to the point they stop believing in themselves. So worn out that the prospect of starting new seems impossible - but its a lie. The skills people have ARE valuable, as are the ethics, resourcefulness and outright courage to work at such a toxic environment. Its US Bank that told you are not worth keeping, and they are lying to you… they are the quitters, they quit on you and blamed you.

Your story is just so common at USB. Nothing but dedication, good reviews, positive attitude, hard working. You're out. You've worked your a-s off for half of your working life, and put up with cr-p for 20 years and are let go by incompetent, useless, middle managers. Of course your direct manager didn't know about this. They are not yet part of the useless class of managers at USB and TOS.

The multiple layers of useless managers just love moving resources around. The resource is never in a seat long enough to learn their job before being moved to a new area of responsibility. They love the word Pivot. Pivot means, poor management planning and some unfortunate front line employee is going to be moved around. Their new spot is going to be way worse than the seat that they are leaving. Lots of stress and never any training. Employees are expected to never complain, keep quiet, accept the new seat and smile. A few months later or maybe a year, pivot again. This is why they have so few SMEs in TOS.

I'm sorry you were treated this way but you're better off not working here anymore. It really is he-l.
