Maybe as an intern or new college hire. Just not in IT or the TAC. The center is questionable since most on that team are incompetent. Don't stay more than 3-5 years either. If you are more seasoned I wouldn't come in as anything less than a Sr Manager or director. Anything less (if you have management experience) is a waste of time. FYI, the only ones saying t is the #1 company are the new hires, newly promoted, or rear kissers. From 97-2005 it was probably the tops anywhere. After that it has went into a continuous nose dive. EDS, 3com, EMC and IBM are sweatshops and outfits lacking any employee respect that come to mind.

If you want your friend to suffer then yes. The end is quite predictable Lr'd or bullied till Lr'd. No recognition of the countless nights. Everyone else will praise you and you'll be expecting a raise or promotion but in reality your manager will make an excuse to let you go. I think these managers are insecure and would like to have less competent employees around them so they feel intelligent.

Cisco needs to get rid of all these mentally sick managers if it wants to survive and induct from all the new companies Cisco is buying.

Ignore whiners (sic), yes. But those exist everywhere.

Obsolete employees who are hanging around.... It's not the employees who are obsolete, it's the tools/products that Cisco uses that's obsolete. Cisco considered me obsolete at one point and LR'd me. Another company felt differently and hired me for slightly more than Cisco paid. Then suddenly Cisco decided I wasn't so obsolete and contacted me needing me to come back. I only agreed to come back for a much better raise; 25%. I know it puts a huge target on me, but I'm safe for at least 1-2 yrs while I document and train my replacement(s) and then I'll get a severance package at this 125% rate, so I have $ to invest thanks to Cisco's earlier short-sightedness.

If you do your job, you will become obsolete and then need to worry about layoffs. You'll definitely get older and become a target. The real question is whether or not you got enough promotions and/or raises to put you above the median which increases the size of your target.

Cisco is a great place to “start” your career for an aspiring technical sales or sales engineering role. Access to experience large corporate field sales team dynamics (even if undesirable) is valuable at similar companies. Create a 3 year plan for where you want to be either at Cisco or elsewhere. Most importantly don’t be afraid to jump ship to make sure your career needs continue to be met. 5+ years career aspirations at Cisco are either for folks that have properly networked internally or looking to coast.

The way Cisco used to be: so when I hired on in 2000 at the age of 28, I was given 6,000 (pre-RSU) stock options - just for the hiring incentive. Each subsequent year I was issued additional options, one memorable batch of 3,000 at $9 a share for a special focus project. I lasted almost twenty years as a blue badge and have enough to retire in my early 50s. Ask yourself - does Cisco do that for early in career hires currently? Guessing probably not. RIP Old Cisco.

Cisco is a horrible place for early in career employees. Many teams work on legacy technologies... it's very difficult to obtain relevant experience with all the reorgs and politics.

Yeah, but only as a stop gap if they were out of work.
Even with that I’d suggest they not to personally invest, not expect any performance based promotion or pay raise. Enjoy the good health insurance but don’t get caught on the carousel of growing comfortable hanging on waiting for RSUs to vest.
Give it 2 years max and start planning your exit 1.5yrs in.

Cisco is a great place to work for 25-35 year olds. The company will cash in on your energy, enthusiasm, and optimism. Eventually you will need to move into leadership to have a chance of growing your income. At that point, you will learn to network up, and pass the buck. You will learn a lot being a front line manager, as the company will expose you to all kinds of pressure and problems. But, you will need to move on by the time you are 40, as you will be targeted for redundancy, unless you have attached yourself to a skilled politician rising up through the company. Don't worry, once you get past front line management, you will never again be accountable for anything!

If they were skilled in office politics, infighting etc. then yes.
But I don't have such friends, so I would tell them to stay clear, not to end up like me.

Probably not.

Yup, you're an individual contributor. If you were a SVP, VP, Sr Director or Director, and possibly as a manager, you definitely would. You'd be building your "empire" just like every other Director and above and you'd protect them from LR's, so they could slack off and make the contractors do the real work.
