What are the chances of fulfilling the requirements of a PiP? Did anyone actually take the initiative and leave? Are the expectations unattainable? Is the duration of a PiP standard or dependent on the individual?

PIP is code for update your resume and look for a job asap. I was insulted when I was put on a PIP (along with 2 other members of the team). We had a lousy manager and he was able to blame us and cover his incompetence. We all quit and found new jobs before the PIP term had a chance to complete. No surprise 6 months later, the manager was kicked out.
Sometimes a PIP isn't about you - it's about the manager and/or the company.
I never looked back.
If I was given a PIP I would login to workplace and resign immediately.
Manager would not get 1 more email or phone call from me.
Let them find out the hard way the workload I was taking on.
*I would not make the same decision in a horrible job market.
How is a PIP not an RA? Either way, aren't you fired?
Be very careful if you are thrown in to a PIP. It is 3 months initially and if you do not "shape up (to a goal that is most often unattainable), it will extend to 6 months and finally you are thrown out of the company - simple as that!
What a pathetic way to run a business, not least because there is little correlation with your performance and your contributions to IBM. It is all about IBM trying to get rid of people with as little cost as possible.
A total and utter disgrace.
To IBM employees (whether on a PIP or not) - leave that sinking ship.
Everyone I know over a certain age was eventually given either a RA or PIP.
Everyone with the PIP declined the challenge and took the ‘package’ and retired. I’ve seen this technique even applied to high performing and high ranking folks.
There’s no point in torturing ourselves when we all know the FLM’s objective is to cut x number of heads.
PIP = RA, in practice.
PIP is a win for IBM.
If you accept the PIP, then IBM gets some work out of you and it doesn’t count as a RA when the PIP is not achieved.
I would spend the time and effort looking for another job.
Most PIP’s boil down to your manager and their expectations of reality. Some managers are realistic and the PIP can sometimes be achieved , and some managers just want to run you off and put in unrealistic expectations. Approx 90% of all the PIP’s I have seen are unrealistic, but do have an escape clause that grants you the severance package if elect to take it in the first 30 days
I was on a PIP, achieved the objectives, was RAd 1 year later, found another role within IBM.
Its down to your manager and what they put in it. I'm no longer with IBM but I was put on a PIP and I achieved it. I then left about 4 months later but thats a different story.
PIP's may be used a lot in place of RA's now but thats not always the case
Knew a number of people on PIP and none survived. PIP best practice is to immediately redirect all your time on outside job search.
We had someone on our team who deservedly received a PIP and still kept their job.

I've never been on one or known someone who was on a PIP, but past scuttlebutt here has indicated they're usually unrealistic with the intention to get rid of you. There's also been people here who claimed to have been on and met PIP goals.
I'd think they'd review it with you and you can clarify and have documented any questions.
