Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Too young but too old

I’ve been laid off more than once from past jobs and it normally takes me at least 9 months to find a job.. I’m in my early 50s now and if I get fired (which is bound to happen) I’m pretty much screwed. The older you are the more difficult it gets especially in today's “modern environment”. The reality of my situation is I’m too young to think of retiring and too old to hire. Honestly, there’s nothing anyone can say or do to feel secure - eventually we’re all in the same boat.

Do not blame your age. I retired in 2013 from XOM and have continued working as a consultant for three companies, and am now hired as staff with a fourth company. Sell yourself. Don't feel sorry for yourself.

Start your job search in July when you are 54. This will give you 12 months to find a job before your potential PIP. Then transition straight into that new job you found. No missed paychecks and maybe even get double pay for 3 months if start new job immediately. Also do not take any vacation prior to ranking discussion in the year you turn 55.

I will be carefully managing my money and assets so that I can retire before 50. I have seen the way companies look at 90% of workers who are 50+. Its not good and I want to avoid it if possible.

NRE's were a protected class during last year's PIP layoffs. The company fears age discrimination lawsuits. Play the card if necessary. The company doesn't play fair, why should you?

"Blame yourself" is not relevant.

The company wants to pay 1/5 salaries.

Start looking for a new job before they fire you. Even if you have to take a pay cut, if it’s a better culture it’s worth your sanity.

Your problem is that you blame your age. Blame yourself.

Buc-cees pays $22/hr for a shift leader, + good benefits and still working for a TAMU Grad!
I've told partner over and over that Buc-cees is looking so much better.

What are your skills? I would start looking into consulting or building your own consulting company now so you have something to fall back on.
