Is anyone a regrettable loss?

Can we think of anyone that Chevron does not think they can replace tomorrow?

Obviously everyone is replaceable eventually, but that’s sort of irrelevant. Decisions are constantly being make, day by day, that have long-term impacts and can be costly to reverse. If the right people are not in the right place at the right times more of those choices will be poor and the result will be poorer financial performance. We took a big hit this last lay-off, with a significant acceleration of the ongoing “great crew change”, right when management decided to turn everything on its head by thinking the Microsoft business model was somehow better than the previous time-tested Chevron model. Time will tell, but that was a huge risk at this time with lots of inexperienced managers and technical crews taking over operations and wildly fluctuating oil prices.

If someone is irreplaceable, it's because they haven't done their jobs well enough. Those deemed 'irreplaceable' almost always means they are one-trick ponies who have deliberately not trained anyone to take over their job (take a look at the Tech Center, lots of people there like that). Career growth comes from developing a skill, teaching someone else how to do it, then moving on to a more challenging skill.

“The new lack of focus on results…”
I asked why deliver results is only 1/4 of the rating system during a townhall when the new system rolled out. HR said that they are weighted differently. This doesn’t seem obvious to anyone who uses the system, but allegedly there’s a formula behind the scenes that makes Deliver Results count more for your performance ranking. Although, when I gave out raises this year, it was all about how many “exceeds expectations” my direct reports received out of the four possible, so that formula response doesn’t ring true.

Everyone is replaceable. But I can think of a few who left the ABU this last round who by their absence fundamentally changed the experience of working for Chevron. Some great business leaders. They seem happy to have gone though. Ah well.

Yes. You are a regrettable loss to your kids and loved ones. They need you. So don't skip one single ball game or a dance recital. The company will not miss you. The company does not care.

I wish I would have worked longer hours and attended one more meeting. Said no one, Ever.

@wxb, Yea, we said and repeated that exact same thought in many different ways for 30-40 years. They're gonna learn!!!!! they're gonna regret this!!!!!!! Then you retire. Don't kid yourself. Life goes on.

Oh Chevron believes everyone is replaceable as they just don't care about their employees. The dividend and executives are all that matter. They want to blame the morale issues on working from home and the pandemic but the true issue is the massive layoff, chaos that followed and then extra work loads. Eventually after more attrition they will have to start caring about their employees.

No question that every individual is replaceable, but also no question we will have big holes opening in experienced Petrotech and other high skill areas as soon as the economy continues to heat up in the next year or two.

Everyone is replaceable. However, Chevron is not blessed with an abundance of employees that can combine technical/business knowledge, lead with vision, develop people and can actually close and deliver results. There has been a noticeable deterioration in morale, performance and commitment in Midcontinent because the Management drove out high performing people to open up positions for favorites and youth. The new lack of focus on results means everyone is replaceable but rallying around mediocrity is not exciting and does not inspire people to come to work driven to make a difference
