Are those that Nike manages to convince that they are an important part of the bigger company mission a bit funny to you too?
So did my colleague, thought that he was very important and valued here, until he started wondering why he didn’t get a promotion. They soon got rid of him.
This is just a trap. They convince people that they are important so as not to lose an employee who works a lot and demands little. As soon as such employees start thinking with their head, it turns out that they are not "important" at all.

This is not unique to Nike. You just described most large companies.
I’m a high performer at Nike. I’m also well aware that given how quickly everything in the world is changing these days I could be out of a job six months from now with little to no warning. I plan accordingly - especially with my finances - and don’t lose any sleep over those things I can’t control.
Do the same thing and Nike can never “trap” you.
