I learned yesterday that my manager found out from one of my coworkers I was job hunting (learn from my idiocy: keep your private stuff private) and I have no idea how that's going to play out. I don't know if I should approach him about it, pretend it's not happening, or what. What's the worst thing that could happen?

I once attended a lecture where they found that most web searches at work were job boards.
Most good bosses are know the job market and are job hunting also. You need to know if there are greener pastures. Your boss also knows the market for you on the outside (since his resume is out there also. So do not expect to BS him into a pay raise, he knows the market also. In last 40 years, I cannot think of a time when people were not job hunting. There has always been a steady 2 to 3% attrition plus normal 3% retirement attrition. The company is not concerned with bottom 40% attrition (non-regrettable attrition) , it does get very concerned when top 20% start quitting. The HR interviews these carefully especially women and minorities (they do not care highly compensated old white guys quit). Top 20% right now can get a pay raise by quitting, if you are less than 8 years experience.

Numb one - (s)he's going to be envious.
Any SPV/MGR in EM knows their underlings and overseens are more valuable in the market.
If they have been on EM's leadership path more than 3-4 years, they are small fried potatoes now.
Even the private prison jobs are closing up these days.
Maybe you might admire their envy. Even envy their envy.
But you got better things to do as you move proudly on.

Whoops. Had something similar happen yesterday. Resume was open on the screen when he visited... Oh well.
You have to figure that they're happy to have us leave. Gets headcount down.

Never tell anyone until you are ready for the news to be out. If you dont want info put out there, don't say it. People at EM have loose lips. Gossip wh0res in my opinion
I wouldn't worry to much... Almost anyone from Exxon knows the state it is in and finding another opportunity is almost on everyones mind. He can't trust the coworkers word in stone until he personally knows. Taking days off would fule that rumor. Only thing worse would be him pusing you to pip since you are already getting out
At my time at EM. My manager and head engineer ask when I would leave. But were every professional about it. I wouldnt say much unless I have another job ready to start.
Offer to proofread each other’s resumes. He’s probably looking too.
If you manager doesn't already assume all their reports have their eyes open to other opportunities, he/she/they are d-mb.
You should always be job hunting, even moreso in good times.
Never forget that your coworkers are your competitors too!
