Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike targeting older workers?

Did they layoff everyone over 45? I’ve been gone for a few years but my LinkedIn feed is a daily parade of former peers who are all now out of jobs. It seems like this has been non stop since last March.

It is really unfortunate as the tenure of most of these people is well over 20 years. They are, slept and bled orange.

I want to come back to this post in a few years and check out the newer posts, when all colors of 45+'s are targeted and fired, including those being hired to help fix diversity issues. if you are not changing roles every few years, you are doing something wrong to your career. If you are not changing companies every few years, it is the same...good luck to those who have been recently let go. Maybe you do not feel that way now, but Nike letting you go might be the best thing ever happened to you. Believe me as a person who left 10 years ago. I have never regretted it for a second, knowing how incompetent >90% of the management and how heavy this is on people. No one coaches, no one is stretched properly, no genuine feedback shared within the organization, therefore no real opportunity for anyone to get better at anything. My humble advice is that once you are done letting some steam off here, look in front of you and leave this place behind. not worth it!

ooh sorry @1hww I should of clarified. No poor white male kid that doesn't do illegal behavior and is trying to better themselves in life doesn't get an easy path.

It’s interesting that some of the commenters here find it to be perfectly justifiable - and perhaps even a good thing - that some Nike workers would be targeted for termination specifically because they are white and older.

It’s also terribly ironic that in doing so these “champions of fighting racism” are, themselves, exhibiting racist behavior.

Oh well. At least the downvotes reflect that some semblance of sanity still exists at Nike. For now.

@1bwa and others need to educate yourself. I’m white and was once busted (in the 80s) for having weed on me. I didn’t get in any real trouble and never feared that I would. In fact, I thought the whole thing was pretty funny at the time and up until recently when I realized THAT’S white privilege.

Funny though how it’s the old guard who actually built this company into what it was and is and yet all of you are just exhibiting reverse racism in the guise of being woke.

Sure tear it all down and laugh at wh---y. Be careful what you wish for…

You all keep trying to claim all these white people are racist.

With nike executives having diversity goals tied to their comp it is a fact that if they want to meet these goals white males will need to be replaced with other genders and races to meet these goals.

Also for poor white kids there is nothing in society geared to make the path easy. No scholarships, no government programs no help from anybody. Not sure how you can generalize ALL white people have it easy....just like I don't generalize ALL black people are poor and can't figure out how to get voter id.

If the comments and downvotes are a slice representing the larger picture of Nike employees, they are going to have a hard time meeting the diversity goals they recently set. It's hard enough getting people who are not white to move to the Portland area, but just reading some of this stuff would make me want to run the opposite direction if Nike offered me a job. But, I guess a lot of you would be happy with that.

The same goes for athletes Nike signs. A lot of you would rather see Nike crumble to the ground than to see an athlete of color speak their minds with Nike's backing. Believe me, those athletes are also paying attention to the culture at Nike.

White people are upset

Yet look at the majority of all of Nike superstar athletes. They are all BLACK!!

I continue to say that Nike owes so much of it success to Michael Jordan. Without 23 there is no sneaker culture or this huge corporation we know as it is today.

The fact that so many white men are so sensitive about losing their jobs when everything in society is geared for them to win is also hilarious. Maybe it’s time to pick yourself up by the bootstraps.

Truth is if you are ANYBODY and you aren't where you feel you should be in life you only have yourself to blame.

No need to be racist.

@paj

Exactly. The same people who complain that other people need to pick themselves up by their bootstraps are complaining because now they're being forced to do just that. Look, if you're a white male over 45 and you aren't where you feel you should be in life you only have yourself to blame. Everything in our society has been geared to make your path in life easy. If you weren't able to take advantage of that then I don't know what to tell you other than see your way to the back of the line.

Yes, long term employees are being targeted.
Especially white males over 45.
Some might say it's clearing the old guard, or D&I wokeness, or correcting an imbalance.
If you're in that target demographic you should keep your contacts warm as IT continues to clear house in advance of the official "re-org" this Summer.
