That’s the conclusion I finally came to when I tried to explain to myself why this company is going downhill. I can't believe that incompetence has so much to do with it. I just can’t believe it and that’s why I think they essentially don’t have the ambition to make things better at ATT. As long as they are still doing well, nothing will improve here.

Why would they? They pride themselves on having a miserable, malcontent workforce. Better chance that employees Wil leave for greaner pastures, exactly what they want.
The issue is that there is too much leadership that doesn't understand the technology and has no interest in it. They build up a large staff of orbiters to handle technical discussions and, more importantly, dress up bad news as good news in the slide decks that are presented to higher levels.
This is not a company where honesty is rewarded. This is a company where telling the emperor she has no clothes will earn you a spot on the surplus list.
So what happens when an outside leader comes into AT&T? They are gaslit until they leave. None of the nepotistic old guard Bellheads believe the fresh perspective. They assume the new leader has issues, not the business that they, their parents, and their grandparents helped build.
This is why AT&T is out-competed by companies with a modern and open culture, like T-Mobile. Never forget that John Legere started his career at AT&T. He didn't have the executive sponsorship to advance his career, so he left and set out to transform the industry. AT&T didn't foster the vision to see what was happening, and now we are behind. The only way to get ahead is to disrupt ourselves and get rid of the old Bellheads.
Ratty and Stinky excelled at making things better... for themselves and the BoD.
No one else matters, not the owners, not the customers, and certainly not the grunt employees.
