Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How will I face my boss tomorrow?

I’m highly ranked but actively looking to get off this sinking ship (let’s be honest - who isn’t?) and I had a job interview after work today today with another company in Houston. I was really excited about the opportunity. When I joined my Zoom interview, I immediately recognized one of the three managers interviewing me - it was my current supervisor’s spouse. I’ve met them previously at happy hours and holiday parties, but I didn’t realize they worked for this other company. I’m 99% sure they recognized me, and even if they didn’t, my resume makes it very obvious that I work for their spouse’s team. Neither of us said anything about it during the interview.

I’m so scr***d. Spouses wouldn’t keep something like this secret from each other, right? The manager who interviewed me HAS to have tattled on me by now. I don’t know how I’m going to face my boss tomorrow. Ugh.

Advice, sympathy...I’ll take it all.

OP here. Boss didn’t directly address this with me the day after my interview, but when walking by my desk, caught my eye and gave me a smile and a knowing nod. Within a couple of hours, I had an email from the other company requesting a second interview.

I have a feeling my boss might have known about this all along and been vouching for me behind the scenes. I’m shocked but so grateful. Don’t hate on ALL managers at this company - some actually do have souls and want good things for their people.

In a gender neutral sense, I guess thou moon both them and they.
In an offering way.

Good luck with that approach.

If you have a good relationship with your boss, they likely would (or did) put in a good word for you to their spouse. Most people are still human, even EM supervisors.

@xly+1bnrJ4Af Not everyone. Some people are still getting raises and RSUs

Don’t worry about it. If my staff found better jobs, I will be happy for them. This company isn’t what it used to be and it’s part of Darren’s grand plan to have attrition anyway.

Nothing wrong, in fact your manager probably knows you applied for the role already. He might have even talk about your good performance to his spouse.

@OP I wouldn’t sweat this.

For one, your boss is probably doing the same thing. For another, there’s a lot of established case law that prevents this from being used against you in any way.

Keep up the hunt and good luck.

The company wants to be rid of all of us anyway, that is how they behave, right? So head, you are doing exactly what they want. No shame or guilt what so ever. I hope you get the job and get out of this dumpster fire.

Assuming your sup finds out from their spouse (which is likely, but not necessarily a 100% guarantee) this probably isn't as big of a deal as you fear

At this point I think any decent first line supervisor at EM would assume a majority of folks on their team are flight risks and that many are actively looking for other jobs. There's a chance your supervisor might do what they can to retain you knowing your actively interviewing elsewhere (which substantively probably isn't much).

I obviously can't say how your particular situation will pan out, but if someone on my team found another better job I'd just be happy for them.

Now there's also a chance they react badly, but it's not like they can just suddenly boot you out without cause, and besides - you're already looking for other jobs and getting interviews anyway. Either way, hope you land the new job!

I would guess your current boss already knew before you went to the interview. At least I would expect the interviewers would have reviewed your resume prior to the interview. Your current boss shouldn’t be surprised.
