Apparently, since IBM RESO was unable to sell the real estate holdings in Rochester for anything more than a fire sale price, Kyndryl Operations will be based there, so the real estate can be included in the spin off. (Kyndryl HQ will be based in NY, however.) Rumor has it that anyone who doesn't have special dispensation to work remotely will have to relocate to Rochester! Anybody else hearing this???

No ones going to Rochester. Fake news.
What your google about the current population of RST has to do with this thread is beyond me, BUT OK. This thread is asking about GST employees who may be asked to move to RST and has zero to do with the current population
Your math is WAY off. I just Googled it..there are only 2700 to 4400 ibmers in Rochester mn
OK let’s do the math 30k 1/2 work at customer sites = 15k 1/2 work at other IBM locations (data centers, cloud locations, labs) = 7.5k 1/2 of them work from home = 3.75k That still leaves the same result. RST if all GTS employees are in the mix, would have to absorb 3.75k. Not sure there is enough space in the 8 remaining buildings for that. Was that so hard??? Bruh Yes I assumed 2 actions into one, but they were spelled out. Oh well Now you get to the number and the question Does RST have the space, OR is this just a power lab services statement that folks have to move to RST?
"I think you need to do the math on this. Let’s assume 30k USA GTS employees. 1/2 work at customer sites and other IBM lab locations. That leaves 7.5k'
Bruh... check YOUR math.
I think you need to do the math on this. Let’s assume 30k USA GTS employees. 1/2 work at customer sites and other IBM lab locations. That leaves 7.5k Let’s assume 1/2 can work from home That leaves 3.75k. Does RST have enough space to absorb 4K worth of heads? Perhaps it’s just a portion of GTS say “lab services specializing in Power” Then the math could look way different
So headquarters in NY and operations in MN?
At least those people in MN will only have to wake up 1 hour early for mandatory BS calls from HQ.
And probably easier to pick up MN accent than learn a whole different language.
OP here ... sounds like the part about selling the Rochester real estate is not correct, if it was sold in 2018. However, when the Endicott, NY real estate was sold in 2002, IBM had to agree to a 10-year lease of about one-third of the site to close the deal. Since IBM is still leasing space in Rochester, maybe there is a similar long-term lease that IBM is looking to jettison along with the rest of Kyndryl. Have also heard that IBM is "overstuffing" Kyndryl with people, so IBM isn't on the hook to lay them off, and Kyndryl has to do their dirty work. Have seen IBM do this with divestitures in the past. Forcing people to move to an undesirable location like Rochester may be a "soft layoff". Rochester's probably a great place if you're into winter sports like snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, etc. But, if you're not into weather patterns and landscape similar to Siberia, then it's probably not the place for you.
Source? False news mate.
They already announced headquarters was in New York there’s no chance they would be up in MN, USA
IBM sold off the Rochester property in 2018. IBM currently leases 8 buildings on the property.
This really hard to believe. I worked in Rochester for three years before putting in for a transfer to get the heck out. If you love Ice Fishing, you'll be in heaven; for others, not so much.
"For those of us who might be in this boat, what is so bad about Rochester? Serious question. "
Welcome to little Somalia.
Google "Somalis in Minnesota" and connect the dots.
Then there's the weather in that region.
There's a reason they can't sell it, LOL!
For those of us who might be in this boat, what is so bad about Rochester? Serious question.
Yes, I heard the same thing. I just hope that I will be able to work remotely and not have to relocate, otherwise I will have to look for a new job. Not the greatest start I had hoped for with Kyndryl!!
