IBM is hiring a few thousands jobs. Go look on ibm web site. why is this news?
The attrition in all Canada locations is very high, just in my location about 80 ppl have left since January. Some of these positions got a backfill approved but no location besides Toronto can hire, all the back fills are going to the GTA regardless of where the core team is. That is how you can disguise attrition and low retention as new hires and office space.

Most americans probably don't... but if my experience decades ago living in Montreal in the summers are indicative... compared to major cities in the USA, Canadian cities lack the rotting inner city that most USA cities have.
The city I lived in back then in the USA... the subways and trains were covered with graphitti. Montreal "Le Metro"... looked spotless and safe by comparison.
Don't know if that's the same today or if the Detroit rot has made it's way across the border, etc.
IBM is always hiring, hard to say if they're new jobs or not though. IBM Canada has been going gangbusters for the last 5 years, so it's about time there was a nice new office.

This borders on fake news. First off, that office space amalgamates at least 4 small IBM offices scattered throughout Toronto's downtown core. Secondly, Greater Toronto Area's city of Markham has TWO large facilities where most of IBM's Toronto employees work
