I prefer to work and it is easier for me to work with bad employees who often have a very negative attitude, than with mediocrities who do more damage to this company than bad employees.
This used to be a company where not everyone could be employed. Who hired so much mediocrity? Is it a problem of selection or is it a problem that talented people no longer want to work here?

You must be one of those "tenured" people who think they're better than everyone. This environment is toxic, tenured people throw everyone under the bus to keep their jobs safe. They don't know what a team is, they have no clue how the real world works. All they "know" is NOV. Run.
Obviously this mediocre post has to be about the leadership witin NOV or rather the lack of leadership.
If you have always done what you have always done etc etc etc
Hiring "Mediocre" is not the problem. Promoting and empowering them is. Mediocre managers (who neither earned degree from top institutions nor willing to pursue even when given a free card) wouldn't hire or promote anyone smarter than they are. Even if they accidentally did, naturally the talented folks won't stick around as soon as they realize the cr-p.
Sounds like Greengate, exactly the same there.
Even the skilled people only produce mediocre results now. After you tell people “just do what it takes to get by” for so long, eventually thats what you will get all the time. When you slap people’s hands for trying to do right, do you think they will continue to want to do right? Integrity is non existent here. They preach quality until its time to get something out the door. Just do as you are told and collect your check.
If you follow mediocre and bad with managers you have summed up Gateshead exactly , what a shower !
Dont get carried away with your delusional ideals of utopia, mediocrity breeds mediocrity.
