Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

No more layoffs?

If XOM plans to fire employees based on performance reviews, does that mean we are done with traditional layoffs? It would be good to know that those of us who are among the best performers can relax from now on since that is not the case when it comes to layoffs.

In my experience one Managers High Performing employee is another's average or low performing employee. Many of the so called High Performers are just buddy buddy with their Manager. Not to say there are not High Performers out there, just that most are not really.

The safety net of 20 point climbs or drops is now gone. No safety net means year on year survial. The alone should alert people that there is no longer a long time career for most, unless your are NRE, or connected internally based on nepotism.

Bro, how long have you been at XOM?? You should know by now that a “high performer” is highly objectionable. All it takes is one manager to dislike you and you’re done for.

If you think top performers will not get PIPed you are 100% wrong. It has nothing to do with performance. It has to do with money . If your years of service are over thirty you are likely to get PIPed. You’re probably making good money if you have been here that long . It has to do with age and sometimes they do it if they want to get rid of somebody that has a disability. It’s a CYA in most cases. Once you are PIPed it’s very hard to get the respect you deserve because you have a mark on your back.

To answer this question it helps to talk about downsizing, layoffs, attrition, and PIPs.

PIPs have happened every year for the last 20+ years. In most years people separated by PIPs are replaced by new hires. I.e. in most years PIPs do not result in a smaller organization.

Every year some people leave the organization for various reasons (retirement, new career opportunity, PIP, ...). This attrition is typically 5-7% each year, and again, in a typical year those people are replaced by new hires. This is all normal and in normal time the company controls its size by controlling hiring. If you hire above attrition you grow, if you hire below attrition you shrink. 2020,&21 were unusual in that the controlling hiring was not enough.

Downsizing is different. If the company needs to downsize faster than attrition then there are layoffs.

So, to get to the original question, many (but not all) business units appear to be close to the target size so it is reasonable to expect fewer layoffs going forward. However, some business units are still above the target size.

For example, in my opinion, chemicals looks about the right size, refining looks long (too many refineries), US production looks long, overseas production varies by country, projects and engineering look about the right size, but research looks long, EMIT is long, HR is short.

I power walk every 30 mins, yam, attend meetings and print out document like it's no ones business! I also carry a notepad and write down everything any manager says! So of course I am high on myself because I am a top performer and will never be laid off. To get my bonus this year I made sure managers saw me holding the handrail with two hands! You low performers cant accomplish what I can!

Don’t get too comfy. In this environment, “among the best performers” can easily become NI or NSI the next year.

Not clear if new layoffs (beyond the upcoming disguised layoffs) are coming in the next year or so. If so, we’ll probably hear about it from the news media before the company, like the fiascos we saw last year (great job TG and HR team)
