BK’s comments in the EMIT townhall were dismissive. He’s exaggerating to basically throw shade on the true fact that our compensation in EMIT is not competitive. For those not able to see that and took what he said literally - well, that’s on you…..like all of our LT, deflect, dismiss and tow the line….

The hotshots comment was probably the most disrespectful thing IMHO

I hear you - bay area is expensive. I should clarify I am with faang and am remote. I guess I got lucky and am with one of the companies that has great WLB (aka rest and vest) - I wouldn’t consider xom rest and vest with the pips, but it sounds like you had a different experience. We rarely PIP where I am at.

No doubt leetcoding is a drag, but in my experience - I never use it on the job. I practiced around 6 months, but I had never done it before. Now its fresh - I was able to get offers from all the biggies

I agree with you - I think Amazon culture is worse than xom (I turned them down).

Its also team dependent - sounds like you got put on a rough team.

@1vtv+1bwEG68i - Not who you replied to, but as someone that left EM for FAANG+ (not that bs Amazon either that EM SWEs are leaving to) the grass isn’t always greener.

  1. Yes the TC is good but I had to move to Bay Area which is expensive af compared to hou. Had a nice large home in hou but here I can get a shack for $1mil.
  1. At EM I could rest and vest, probably worked 20-30 hours/week of true work. Here I regularly pull a 60+ with on call of true work so they make you work for it.
  1. The culture here is also hyper competitive and fast (way more than EM) since you’re competing with fresh Ivy grads who have coded since diapers and want your spot. Have seen some L5/E5/IC5 colleagues get PIP’d out.
  1. Next hiring bar - there’s a reason you see so many SWEs on blind practicing for months to a year+ and still failing to make it in.

I’m not saying you’re wrong but just consider that it’s different stokes for different folks. Some people want to make six figures and craft PPTs or do their bs legacy CRUD programming to focus on their family. Sometimes I miss it personally…I’m going to do this for a few years more and go back to a chiller firm.

@1zwl+1bwEG68i - if you don't believe it, that's fine. You sound like you parrot all those e-mails that came out which had an underlying tone "we pay competitively so we can slash benefits and fire workers." That might be true for people who can only make PP slides and have no tech ability.

Want details on where to get a 6 figure raise? It's called SWE (software engineering)

Go to levels.fyi where people post their salaries for tech positions.

L5 Google - 351,000 average yearly comp
L4 Google - 241,000 average yearly comp

L4 average YOE is 3-5 - L5 is 5-10 yoe

These are negotiable. I have seen L5's break 400 and L4's break 300. In addition, I have seen people get L5 with less than 5 YOE.

Amazon, FaceBook, & others have similar Comp structure.

Did we mention benefits? FB pays all of your insurance and gives crazy low deductibles (10 bucks). Oh, and 401K vests immediately - not like Exxon. Leave when you want. BTW, since the large portion of your comp is stocks, and tech stocks are going crazy high over time, it means that your stock grants that are awarded with a 4 year outlook when you join go up as well. That is why you see SWE's with 500 or 600K comps & L4 or L5 and under 30 years old, because the stocks doubled, and likewise so did the salary.

My boss asked me if I would refer him - I was honest and told him he wouldn't make it. You need to know algorithms and system design - Exxon is the only Company I know that pays leaders a 6 figure salary for powerpoint slides with no technical ability.

I refer all of my tech brothers from Exxon who I know would be great fit. Love seeing the look on their bosses face when they blow their bosses salary out of the water and the bosses have to figure out whose work they can scalp next for a PP presentation. I think I have referred 10 now - get a referral bonus and I get to pouch the best and brightest that Exxon has, while keeping the PP makers at bay. My boss had a case of extreme narcissism, so I know it ki--s him to know I am making so much more than him (a big reason why I told him)

The long term future of Exxon is that all talented employees will leave and you will be left with the incapable managers who will slowly watch Exxon's market cap deteriorate as they have to find people who they can "manage". No one wants to be managed by someone less competent then they are - so they will find people of lower caliber then themselves. Exxon will become a shell company where they farm out all work to contractors/vendors because the leftover employees will be incapable of doing it.

BTW I love my new boss as well. They know everything technical - you can't be a manager at a tech company without know the ins and outs of what your direct reports do. They know the complexity of what they ask and how hard it is for me to do it. Constantly getting gifts as well.

I left and have 10 times the happiness to have something meaningful to do.
Freaking EM and all the supervisors and managers I came across were the worst people to interact with. They may not be bad human beings but they were all tainted with EM stupidity.

Meh. Took a pay cut. Work about 40 hours per week unless on a project. At Exxon, I used to work 50-60. New company has free drinks and paid lunches twice a week, still has 401k with match, and all benefits (medical and dental for whole family) are fully paid by the company. The atmosphere is much improved. I don't have to deal with endless "systems" that almost add 0 value. I have to know my area well, do a good job, and keep my boss happy. The new boss is actually a good boss, and I realized that I actually like helping people in the new role. Their glad to have a competent person who solves their issues.

Did I mention that I took control of my vested 401k and pension and that they are actually invested for better returns?

All in all I'd say it's "almost" equal in pay/total compensation, and it's absolutely better in environment.

And there's a chance that with the experience and education I had time to pursue working reasonable hours that I may double my pay within 3-5 years. I couldn't have done that at Exxon without sacrificing my happiness and sanity.

I wouldn't knock it.

And to those at Exxon and those who leave it, I hope you all do well.

No hard feelings for those who are still there or those who leave.

I did it in 2014. Left Exxon for a 110k raise, better culture, and greener grass. Grass is still green.

I left and got a 75% pay increase with remote work as it's a global role. Not 3X but still pretty damn good....

Keep in mind EMIT is heavily non-US. I would not be surprised at 2x and 3x salary for someone in Brazil or especially Argentina where EM wages are not keeping up with significant inflation.

Not triple. Usually seen 20% to 40% .... if someone is getting triple- probably a role jump or something. It's pretty atypical.

5 years of experience, BS ChE, worked in manufacturing my entire time.

Have a couple of interesting "extra curriculars" that may have helped with the job search, but overall I think I'm not an outstanding candidate.
