Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

We are all contractors now paid as employees

It used to be contractors were paid more for the instability of a one year contract. Now we all are on one year contracts. You can drop like a rock in the rankings in a single year for saying the wrong thing to the wrong person or not being political. In spite of this we aren’t paid more for the instability. Maybe contractors are winning now relative to employees?

In the 1990's, the consulting companies were telling new hires out of college that they would work for 4-5 companies over a 30 year span. The probability of working for the same company for 30 years was 0%.

In the 2000's, the same consulting companies are telling us that we will work for 10+ companies over a 30 year span.

So yes, we are all contractors that may be hoping from company to company every 3 years. This is why a portable 410K plan that can be moved to the next company is so important.

Instability might certainly be one of the reasons for higher contractor pay, but other reasons include not receiving benefits such as medical insurance and pension contributions. I agree the instability factor now affects the remaining employees.
