Job hunting post-PIL

Thought this might be a good place to discuss the ins and outs of job hunting once you take the PIL.

1) When are people typically announcing on LinkedIn that they’re leaving — the last actual working day, or the final PIL period day? (I understand the company will validate that your last employment day is the final PIL day, but not sure if people are really holding to that on social media.)

2) How are you replying to the, “Why did you leave EM?” question? Do you say you took a package, or give another cover story? (I could quite legitimately say that I left for family reasons — wondering if I should go with that, or with the package explanation.)

3) Any other experience/tips?

You can say worked in a group where the jobs are being offshored. That applies to just about everyone.

  1. Last PIL day. During PIL, you are still legitimately an EM employee with all the benefits. So last day is last PIL day.
  2. I would say my position got eliminated due to downsizing caused by COVID. We're still in a pandemic and potential employers won't have any follow-up questions after that response. It's a given.
  3. Make job hunting your new full time job. Make your resume stand out, practice interviewing by recording yourself (download Zoom, MSTeams, Webex, Skype which are all free and you can record yourself). Network, don't be ashamed to ask for job leads. And most of all, be positive and expect that your best days are still in front of you.

  • Don't mention about PIL/Performance/ or bad mouthing company. Stick to a personal reason (family, seeking a type of opportunity etc). Consider something that is believable, so not suspicious.
  • Focus on taking care of yourself during this transition. Healthy eating, quality sleep, etc. It is normal to feel discouraged/frustrated at a point in the job search process. It can actually take months to find a job with the pace companies move. Tell yourself you will find a job and that this is temporary until you actually believe it. Mental health is important and will affect interview quality.

1) Don’t think this aspect is really super important to be thinking too hard about but probably just put new company start date as actual new company start date and Exxon end date as right before new company start date or PIL end date as the latest (in case you don’t find a job by then)

  1. ) All XOM can say when other companies call to confirm employment is that you currently do/don’t work there and the dates of employment. Smartest thing to say would be that you currently work there if you’re on the PIL and if it’s after the PIL is done you can just say you resigned from the company (for whatever reason maybe something like oh I wanted to look for a job without working and I was financially stable so decided to do so etc.)
  1. ) Took the PIL last year and in a MUCH better spot in my life now but this one is on you :)
