Using all of paternity leave to job search

Late last year and early this year, I was actively looking for and interviewing for new jobs, but decided to put things on hold when we learned my wife is pregnant. XOM's insurance is great for prenatal care, and my wife's doctor is incredible. I was worried about landing a new job in the middle of her pregnancy and potentially having to change insurance (to something potentially worse), change doctors, pack up and move somewhere else (we want to leave Houston), etc. Also, my situation at work is not great, but it is bearable... and I'm not ranked low enough (for now anyway) to worry about getting PIP'ed.

The due date for the little one is getting close and I'm starting to think about ramping up the job search again. I am planning to use all eight weeks of paternity leave at once. During this time I'll basically be full-time job searching (and everything that entails), studying, hopefully getting some certificates, etc., when I'm not caring for my wife and the baby. The hope is that I find something during this time off (hopefully near the end), and can come back to work and immediately give my two weeks notice (if I decide to even do that).

My supervisor and teammates probably won't appreciate me ducking out for eight weeks, as we're already understaffed and overwhelmed as it is... but I've got to look out for myself and my family, and having this paternity leave at my disposable seems like a great opportunity for me to draw income and maintain benefits while doing a ton of work to find a new job. Can any think of any issues or factors I should consider with regard to this plan? I see absolutely no future with XOM. Like many of you I don't want to be here anymore, for many reasons, and we are eager to move away from Houston somewhere closer to family.

Pip or not, you are a proper employee with all bennies.

Stay on payroll under PIP (not PIL), take 8 weeks paternity leave (with concurrent 8 weeks of fmla), add 4 more to get the full 12 weeks fmla. Baby is the best anti-PIP remedy.

Come back, demand an equivalent job back. If they fire/drop you in ranking, file fmla retaliation lawsuit.

Fmla is the most employee friendly law in the US, use it to your advantage.

I wish paternity leave was given when my kids were born. I'm all for it, and most of Europe has been giving paternity leave for many years. My wife had a lot of challenges, and my boss threatened to write me up when I said I needed to go home to help her with something. It was stressful, but we made it through it. I was PIP'd after I had to go on medical leave for a serious condition. When I returned, still recovering with medical limitations, I was told that my backup, while out, did my job better than I did. If I could not do the same or more work than her, I would not pass the pip. 30 years with the company, 51 years old, and chance to retire from the company. It's like 30 years of life down the toilet in one conversation.

Using 2 months out of 12 months on paternity leave guarantees you to drop a bucket. Other people working harder will be ranked higher. I pray for higher performers to take paternity because it gives us ranked slightly lower but willing to work a chance to show what we can do. Company never drops a woman on maternity but white males taking maternity are easy targets to drop a bucket or two.

Don’t burn it all at once. Conserve a little so you can use it to go to interviews. I mean it’s good for a full 365 after the birth. Only trick is, it’s not paid out like Regular vacation if you leave before using it. Good Luck!

FWIW think you could get something great. XOM has shown us all this year that it doesn't care about its employees. Go for it and don't look back. Hope things work out for you man.

I’d take the max leave. You are entitled to it. Focus on your family and new opportunities. I Just got PIPed and have my first baby due in a month…

Agree with what everyone else has said. Babies sleep a max of 2 hours (if you are lucky) so dont know how you will find time to interview and get certificates.

wish you well, however one word of caution: Paternity leave is not like an 8 week vacation. You won't get a moments rest. Once you return to the office, you will be grateful for the 8 hours of peace you get daily at the office. Also congratulations! Kids will change your life and perspective on everything.

You and your family come first. I would do the same. If you cannot find better, at least you will be grateful to be where you are at. I am sure there are supportive members on your team who are happy for you. You earned that paternity leave so take it. You will kick yourself later if something bad happens at work and you did not take the time to look around when you had the chance.

I encourage you to take the entire benefit. You will be glad when you are retired (as I am) that you took the max (as I did).

" change doctors" but the ACA . . Obama said we can keep our doctor!!!

Go for it.If you are seeing now EM does not care about you and your co-workers can be your worst enemy at this time if you tell them what you are going to do.Take care of yourself and your family.
