What happens when people who are members of already butchered teams are fired? Will we get a replacement or are we stuck with even fewer people? One of our guys was put on a PIP last week which makes me think he's as good as gone. But we need him. I honestly don't believe we can function properly with fewer people.

To be fair to old timer, the company in some functions has been overstaffed for awhile. Upstream went through a hiring spree from 2007-2013 to replacement upcoming retirees. In order to train those new folks they overstaffed projects. Now folks think that overstaffed teams is normal. The flaw in the logic was with those doing the hiring-both the assets and retirees left! HJL knew during the bust time he could hire a laid off worker from another company who would be glad to work like a dog for that paycheck. Not right just was what it was like in the 1990s.
I'm just doing the bare minimum until they ask me to leave. I have built up my personal investments enough for financial independence during my free time the past year - if you have been slogging for the company instead of spending the time to invest (in yourself), it's on you.

Ok, I'm trying to follow your logic here. OP is sad that his team is being gutted and there aren't enough people to do the work. Your point seems to be "if OP's team can't do the work we'll just hire people who can!" By definition, this would have to end with a team that's appropriately staffed for their job function. It doesn't really matter if the you've got a hardcore Boomer bad@ss like yourself who can presumably do the work 4 people if you still need 10 people to do the job... You'd still need to hire at least a couple more bad@sses. But sure... I take your point that if soft handed millennials just stopped complaining so much that'd definitely fix the fallout we're having from years of continuous mismanagement.
@OP You answered your own question. Remember, the attrition is the point; it is both the means and the end.
I deal with this by laying down silent markers. If it isn’t covered in my job description, and someone with a different title was doing it before they were “attritioned” out of their job, then I don’t do it. Period.
Retired XOM SVP (HJL) used to say "If you can't do your job, I'll find someone who can"...Everyone of you is replaceable. Get to work or quit or get PIP'd. Those of us who worked under HJL in the "old culture" are sick of your Millenial and WOKE whining.
The company are showing any loyalty to its staff… I think everyone is looking at alternatives now. Warning to any decision making management is that what looks good on paper is only likely to be short term
Sad to see the approach being do more with less without taking into account what work is being done. I thought we were prioritizing and only doing the most important tasks. Everything else needs to stop.
Actually, we do not need all the people that are currently gainfully employed. The Corporation will shrink to 50-55k employees with many job titles continuing to be moved to lower cost business support centers in Prague, Budapest, Buenos Aires, Curitiba, Kuala Lampur, and Bangalore.
Just ask yourself a simple question. Can my current job in North America and Europe be done by someone in a business support center that is 1/5 to 1/7 the cost of Houston and Brussels? Answer: Yes
I have a limit to how much work I will do. If management gets upset that I am not ki----g myself, I'll leave. Their loss. I will not harm myself due to management being cheap.

They are hiring in low cost countries, attrition is going according to the plan.
+1 on the skeleton crew theory. We are currently in the same situation, our manager wants to see how lean we can get. So anytime anyone leaves, they aren’t replaced. The work just keeps getting divided up to see how much can be tolerated.
Between asset Dale's and outscourung jobs to KL or India management thinks that is going to solve the problem.

I was wondering if they are cutting staff in preparation for a merger. Nothing other than speculation to base it on but what logic is there otherwise?
Exxon is skimming employees to test out if the skeleton crew can support its operation... If they can, they draw the line and call it a fully staffed group. If they can't, they fill it up with contractors. They make it so that the employees would have to crosstrain the contractors so they dont get overwhelmed.
