Why force RTO?

I can't understand why they are so determined to force it. Yes, they made it optional for a while, but we all know it's coming. What are the advantages? I know many for WFH, including higher productivity and fewer expenses for the company. So why would they decide to go against their own interests? Is there something I'm missing?

@1pyo: Whatever happened that day, what difference does it make? D.C. is gone and the current CEO followed up with the current WFH policy.

DC had to justify his trip to FL on the company jet as a (nod, nod, wink wink) "business trip" while actually spending the day trying to get his mansion project approved. As I recall hearing, he pulled the "don't you know who I am?" card when the security team member politely stated that he had to go through the same training/questionnaire as any other individual visiting the site. And it was literally just before 5pm Friday after most site individuals had been at work before 7am for a government/military meeting/presentation, and had just left for the weekend. The poor lower level manager who got stuck greeting him (no one knew he was coming) quickly stated that people were working from home when DC asked why there were so many empty cubes. It was actually because DC and crew had outsourced so many positions. DC got his pa----s in a wad and that was it for WFH. That was also the year he sold a lot of stock and missed earnings for the third quarter, and Aero got chewed out. Bad year for DC, worse for the employees.

Culture is shifting and remaining fixed on old models that mandate massive commutes is now doomed. This is like Toyota betting on hydrogen fuel cells... oops.

Labor is scarce. Supply chains are broken and transportation cost have gone assymototic.
It is time for the people that do the work to step up and dictate terms. Honeywell can pay up or choose another business model. Leadership will be forced to choose sooner rather than later. Outsource and pay more, or go vertical like Garmin, tesla, spacex....

I suspect they will pick "new business model" in which case they will continue to close sites and dump staff. Whatever, I will make more at the next job.

Why?.... Two Words... Utilization and Productivity. It is the perception of upper management that by making you come to an office they can make you produce more in a quicker period of time. Simple addition mindset without a greater understanding of how your job functions...

@xys: I (@izn) wrote the previous post. I'm not trying to justify the CEO's decision based on the visit to the Florida facility. At that time I was working from home in Phoenix on Thursdays and Fridays and was told several weeks later that it was no longer going to be allowed. The explanation that I posted was given to me by my engineering manager.

Prior to working at Honeywell I was a military officer and understood that when the general gives an order it's a salute and execute moment. Sure, people grumble about it but it's pretty much understood that it's to your best interest to follow it.

Of course when DC. Visited that facility it was a Friday afternoon prior to a 3 day weekend so many were simply off. Of course he only showed up at the facility because he had used the company jet to check on his ginourmous new FL home and had to make the trip “ business”. He was not officially scheduled to visit any FL facility.

OP: It's my understanding that the WFH policy is simply that the HON CEO (D.A.) has decided that's the way it will be. It was actually started by the previous CEO (D.C.).

If I remember correctly he (D.C.) was visiting a facility in Florida. While walking through some office areas that were mostly empty, he asked why and was told they work from home. He didn't like it and put out and edict to return to working in the office.

Be careful…if you can work from home, your job can be done in India, China, etc…

The answer to 99.9% of the questions at Honeywell: Stock Price

Gotta flex the new Post-Covid technologies in the Home Building Technologies business. What better way to show that than bringing employees back to the office - especially at the new state of the art HQ in Charlotte
