People who brag of working effectively for only two hours

Reading this forum, I got the impression that there are no people in the company who work more than two hours because people brag that they actually have the most fun at work.

I would like someone to let me in on the secret of how you manage it, because I am overwhelmed with work and I don't have any fun here?

A colleague recently quit after 10 years here because he was so overwhelmed that he couldn’t take it anymore.

As a mgr, I try to keep my headcount stable otherwise I would be on the chopping block too. Some of my direct reports have no actual work for several months. So folks saying they put in only 2hrs a day are absolutely correct. I know of a dude (not on my team) who took a 3-month vacation internationally with no work to do. Basically, Cisco paid for his vacation. Good for him.

I've seen both at Cisco. How much work you have depends on how good your manager is at making up work. However, there really is a lot of "busywork" at Cisco. Managers need to keep their resources and justify growing their headcount. I've never done so much useless work for a paycheck before.

Add me to the no work/life balance club. Long days and weekend work are expected in my group, add people leaving with no replacements and I might just be the next one that leaves.

Back prior to 2105, we used to work like dogs, all day / all hour calls, little sleep a few days a week. Least back then (2000-ish to 2012), things were very good for most on options and the RSUs. Things dried up on stock around 2014 it seemed. Glad I rode it out, fortunate it worked out. Not sure if I would relive that time without the deferred compensation. Guessing that is no longer in the cards for the average employee.

No idea where these teams exist. In support for collab its a nightmare. Ten hour days of solid meetings are normal and then you just have to "find time" to get the actual work done. Theres no work life balance. We do the work while managers take all credit and look good during quarterly reviews. So they get the money too. If you are not a manager then good luck ever getting a raise, promotion, or even a cost of living increase. Leadership works everyone to the bone, talking about how much opportunity there is- but if a position actually opens up, managers will not announce it. So nobody has a chance to apply. Leaders are bringing their personal picks in and doing interviews in secret instead of promoting within. I used to be proud to be with Cisco but now I see how things really operate, and I'm sad for all the people who never get what they deserve (good or bad)!

Really depends on your position. I’ve held positions at cisco that are both labor intensive and others that weren’t.

It's a combination of being charismatic and not taking the job seriously. If you can make people like you even though they know you are coasting your career will be on easy mode.

There are many groups at Cisco with only 2 hours of work per day. Work in an organization that has many "pet projects" sponsored by a VP. These "pet projects" never have defined deliverables or budgets. Or work in an organization where most of the work is given to red badges while the full-time employees get to coast. Any red badge that complains will be labeled as negative.
