Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Are you people for real?

How can you be working in O&G for years or even decades and not have developed a thicker skin by now? Some of the complaints I see here are both sad and laughable. Some are valid, especially relating to PIPs, but most are about somebody's feelings being hurt. Grow the fu-k up! This is a place of business, not a kindergarten where somebody will hold your hand if somebody else said a bad word to you. You are embarrassing yourselves.

@OP I’ve commented on this myself.

One post last week actually compared working at EM to fighting a war. At the time Kabul airport was a hot LZ, so I didn’t really follow how reading emails in a building with central AC equated to dodging small arms fire and sweeping for IEDs. Maybe I’m missing something.

Even the investors are not happy. They just have immensely more power than the worker bee.

I think what OP means to say is you need to manage your expectations. Some posts are too idealistic of what one expects to get from this company. It’s been around a long, long time. It isn’t perfect. No company is. This company is pretty set in its ways.

The requests to change how we work have been requested for decades. It has never changed. You have to take the good with the bad.

It takes a while to decide if this place is for you.

So, OP, the posts here are not living up to YOUR standards for a layoff site ? I’m an old guy and I don’t have the same sensitivities as younger people, but this is a venting site, not the work place, in case you haven’t figured it out !
Is it so difficult for you to just ignore the posts or threads that are meaningless to you ? Or is it about control - everything has to be the way you know it and you understand it ?

Those of you who feel the need to call others names and question the concerns are also part of the problem. It just goes to show how far we have fallen. Thirty years ago for the most part this was a professional organization. Now I feel like I am back in the middle school cafeteria. All of complaints come from the same cause-promoting unprofessional and self centered individual game players into management. Real leaders care about the health and wellness of both their people and the company they lead. I haven't seen any one like that in over a decade.

The emotional stuff can be silly but complaints about PIPs and the state of the company are totally valid. It’s not the layoffs per se, it’s that a bunch of incompetent yes-men are the ones making decisions about who loses their job and who doesn’t. These folks have never lifted a wrench and probably wear gloves to the gym. It’s completely reasonable to be upset about that.
