Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

To those who were told that their job was eliminated

I see that some have been told that their job has been eliminated. It must be really stressful but I'm convinced that most of you who are let go will find a much better job. Short term stress for long term good. What interests me is did you have any subtle indications that they would tell you that your job would be eliminated soon?

I can tell you for certain “my job” wasn’t eliminated - the work still had to be done. My salary was eliminated because I made too much money, was a long termer (37 years ); and a 56 year old female. I felt relief leaving that cluster f#c$ !

I was let go a week after the "no layoffs during covid" promise expired which happened to be peak covid season for my area. A day after my father in law died from covid.
In hindsight, I had plenty of warnings about being fired but lack of performance wasn't even close to being one of them.

  1. My boss who did almost as much work as I did PLUS HR stuff was let go a year and a half ago when they said they were targeting middle management.
  2. His boss was let go a few months after and replaced with an onshore non-citizen.
  3. I am application developer and a month before my job was "eliminated" our team was discussing our upcoming projects and my boss mentioned that we had ZERO dollars budgeted for enhancements for the coming year. We had PLENTY of ways to easily increase efficiency and reduce costs but we had been tied up with greenfield migrations and other mandates for the past 2 years.
  4. They announce they were putting our building up for sale.
  5. I'm a straight, white male.

Oh yes. They find issues....lack of performance and maybe a formal made up discussion to preempt the layoff. But this is tolerated. Get to know someone in HR......they will tell you how the bank does its dirty work.

I rarely heard from my manager and he never had any idea what I was actually was working on, but about a week before I was let go he started to get very interested. He followed up multiple times to make sure he understood my tasking. I then received a meeting invite for a “Checkin” out of the blue.

No indication whatsoever. No warnings. There was no directive prior to the layoff to train up someone or anyone on my work "just in case I was ever out". Not even a review of my current responsibilities. Right up to the moment it happened I was doing my usual work AND getting ready for a group project. Honestly I think it caught my manager by surprise as well because he seemed maybe not upset but genuinely affected by it happening. My only real complaint with having my role being declared redundant is the way BNY Mellon goes about separating employees. Other companies let you know its coming so you can get to work on finding a new role elsewhere. It also of course doesn't hinder operations or burden the remaining employees by having their co-workers suddenly disappear.

It was like a punch to the gut by a prize fighter. Not one inkling of any idea that this was coming. Total and complete shock. My reviews have always been stellar, always met everything that needed to be met. Never one BE I was an EIO, took pride in my work and loved my staff. Obviously, the feeling was no longer mutual. When I think of this, it could not actually have happened at a better time since so many places are hiring. There will be something better out there just have to find it. Loyalty means nothing anymore. Their loss is a new employer's gain.

Plenty of them:

  1. Subject of a witch hunt when a mistake was made.
  2. BE on mid year review
  3. Boss only engaged when a mistake was made.
  4. Received a "Farewell, Notify" e mail the day prior.

Result: LIVING MY BEST LIFE NOW!

If they ask you to send all of the work you've done so far on a Friday afternoon, you can definitely be sure they'll give you the axe that following Monday morning

As soon as I indicated on that form that I had no plans on getting vaccinated for COVID, they let me go.
