Houston attrition

Looks like attrition is really bad in Houston. Many posts in LinkedIn about folks leaving with Iconic Cube picture.

Is anyone who was hired in last 5 years still wanting to be with the company?

Has anyone seen any groups leaders provide a compelling vision for folks to stay in the company?

You do realize how relative rankings work right? If I have 10 employees ranked under the current system, and the middle 5 quit, 2 move down and 1 moves up.

You guys are stupid to worry about attrition particularly the ones with 10 to 20 years service. Most quitting are in the middle three quintiles (very few in top quintile quitting...yes it is more than zero but not high compared to high attrition years in 2004 to 2008 (much lower after that because salary curves and increased and promo matrix increased promo). This makes room for all you low performers to take on higher level work which will get you more money (whether you stay or go). Eventually XOM must stop the loss by fixing culture, salary curves and promo frequency. Encourage your colleagues to quit...it will be good for your salary ad career. But you might have to Work a little.

@2yxq+1cMy01lg Your data are correct, the analysis though is wrong. Indeed, in the last 2-3 months the linked in announcements of people leaving are about 5 per week from Houston. That will be 300 on an annual basis or a rather normal 3%. The problem is that among all the people (10 or so) that I know they resigned, none posted an announcement. So, the real resignation rate is a multiple of 3%. I would say at least double or higher based on some data that I saw.

There are A LOT of people in ExxonMobil that do not have degrees suitable to switch to another industry. I’m 45 years old. Switching industries would require another degree, which is difficult to justify at my age. Those 50 spots I mentioned are such degrees.

There are cracks appearing in OPEC+‘s ability to meet world oil demand in 2022. Very real possibility of $100+ oil. They will have to lock the gates to keep everyone from leaving if that happens. There is a growing energy company very close to the campus that is about to hire 50 people. I know that isn’t a lot of people versus Exxon worldwide, but that will be a decent chunk out of one particular GBU that will be targeted.

About 1 per day posting resignation on is 300 per year, pretty minor and much less than 2006 to 2008, because that is less than 1% MPT staff. Attrition is running a little above 4%; 3% retirement and 1 % resignation closer to 7% with PIP (3% PIP attrition); Some groups hit harder (IT). Some groups not at all. COVID delayed 2020 attrition into 2021, so it will slow down in 2022. I expect 2022 salary treatment to be terrible for bottom 3 quintiles (Less than inflation), that will encourage more to quit in 2022. Then attrition slows down in 2022 and 2023.

@OP (and everyone else):

The attrition is the the point

EM publicly announced in June 2021 that they were implementing a performance-based model of workforce reduction that was specifically designed to make “white collar” employees want to quit their jobs. Every other major operating company (Shell, BP, et al) has done the same thing in some form.

Posts about attrition are, at this point, tautological (not to mention boring). Let’s try being a little more constructive.

I do not know where you get your numbers. March (post layoff) to today (pre Pip PIL) headcount reduction in my organization is about 10% in the US (group more than 150), so way above historical. Management does not care because positions/work is transferring to cheap locations.

We haven't seen the trend in Europe yet but expecting it will come in the upcoming months, as the planned lay-off is almost completed. LCM even have to make early announcement regarding salary and promotion in 2022 as management are worried if Europe will follow the great resignation trend.

Regrettable attrition is ~4x higher in each region versus historical. Still only about 5% in US so don’t expect management to care. India and China leaving in droves, ~20-25% YTD. They will get the attention.

It’s the beginning of my third year, I plan on staying yea. Everyone good quit and there’s loads of positions open above me. Why go somewhere where there’s talent to compete against when I could coast up towards the top here unopposed?
