Caregiver leave - what are valid reasons?

This is for the new policy providing up to 15 days. Supervisors are encouraging their people to avail of this, but it seems to open the door to questionable reasons. While some can be quite clear, eg spouse surgery, elder care, etc, there seems to be some leeway to stretch the truth.

What are the experiences of people on this board? Would like to hear from supervisors and supervised alike.

This was very helpful for me as have been helping with care of a sick family member for the past three years with stage 4 cancer and used up all of my vacation days taking to appts and going to chemo sessions etc for the past three yrs. This is the first year things are getting better and have only had to use a few days of family care thus far. It is a wonderful benefit and should be used by those who really need it.

I have no one that needs 'caregiving'. No additional days for me. Just screwed out of my 5 that I had for many years. Offer 'caregiver' or vacation days back and let us choose. I do know that several coworkers have used these days for vacation as no verification is needed. Just say that your mom needs to go to the doctor and sail away

I used to take my mother to the doctor and to attend a care plan meeting. She is in a nursing about 3 hours away from me. In prior years, I would have taken a vacation day.

I used several days when my little one had a fever and could not go to daycare I’m a L2 mgt and didn’t have to submit paperwork or anything . I just told my boss and coded it in eLink. In the past I would have taken vacation days in the past. I never would have taken any sick days or company paid time in the past, but I figured what da heck why not? ; Since they took away 5 days of vacation from me this week.

L3 here, just about any excuse will do. Although we must sign off on these requests, rarely are any requests contested.

I took time off because I just couldn't stand the thought of coming to work.
