Thread regarding Optum layoffs

About to accept job offer from Optum US

Should I do it? I have other job offers from fintech and I thought healthcare industry is stable and growing. Optum has lower job offer but like I said, I like the idea of stability. But looking at the posts here, Optum seems like a chaotic environment. What is the average % base salary increase each year? Do they actually give targeted bonus? 401K matching seems too low at 4.5% max. What about the culture at Optum US, is it toxic? TIA for your insights.

11 managers in 11 years. constant rearrange of the deck chairs for no reason. 1.5% raise if you get one maybe a bonus if you brown nose. Go elsewhere

OP here, thanks for all the feedback. I did not take the Optum offer and went for the other which fared a lot better in total compensation. Optum does not pay very well, it looks like.

I would recommend against taking the job or jab to work for Optum. They have boatloads of cash and they pay well, but it comes at a price: Your ethics and core belief system. All they talk about is Diversity, that is it. If you want to put your PC social skills to work this is the place to do it. If you have already crossed that bridge, say 40 years ago and treat people based on the 'Content of the Character' not the 'Color of their skin' this may not be the ideal place to work. The browbeating and incessant talk of color and pronouns will driver you crazy It starts from the top. It's a way for executive management to give 330K people a 'hive mind' way to obsess on the right hand while not see what the left hand is doing. ////

Only country in the world with employee at whim/will doctrine. The US empire corporation can fire you("Let you go") for NO reason, ANY reason (except race/s-x/ethnicity) without ANY notice. Good luck on the sinking ship

After they give a misley 15 cent raise for the year, the contact you by chat asking if you'll take on another role or project with a whole lot of extra work on top of what you're already doing. So not a promotion just more work for same psy with s couple cents raise. What a joke. And sometimes you're just thrown into the new role with very little knowledge. That could be why this company is so disorganized. They have to be paying someone off to stay in business. So many complaints by everyone, customers, doctors, pharmacies and employees. Urrrr

One thing I would recommend if you do take the job is don't burn any bridges. You never know what one person you know in a role will open up a new role for you further down the road.

If you have other offers that are higher I would take them, Optum does not offer stability and the raises are low once you get in like 1.5-3% and 80% of your bonus target would be about normal.

Please know that most of the people who post here in response to questions are unhappy in their jobs and will tell you to run.

Those of us who are happy in our jobs rarely come and look at this site unless we're bored on a random Friday night. I've been with UHC/Optum for 28 years and wouldn't change a thing. I've had a myriad of roles at the company by finding mentors, volunteering for interesting projects and being deliberate in plotting out my career path. I did end up on a down-sizing list about 12 years ago, but I worked my network of colleagues and quickly found another role.

I do agree with getting as much salary as you can walking in the door.

Average merit increase is 1-2% for top performers, bonus is not guaranteed and results fluctuate wildly based on how your specific department manages the antiquated stack ranking model. Health benefits are atrocious and expensive.

Negotiate hard for a base salary you can live with. Come here if you want to add Agile, fast-paced, chaotic, and highly complex work in a matrixed environment to your resume. Stay away if you want stability and a chance to best practice work.

Spent 7 years in a department at OptumRx. Staff of eleven. Total turn over was 15 employees. 5 let go, 3 walked out, 7 left within a year. Find somewhere else to work. Always new hires but they never stay.

I got 1.5% raise last year, a restaurant gift card bonus, and have to deal with leadership who boasts of yachts and vacation houses.

Toxic environment. Lucky if 2% raise per year. Bonus is not guaranteed and if you are not a grade level 28 or above it will small at best. Constant reorganization and layoffs. Not the place to be if you want stability.

0 to 2% merit increase on average. Bonus is possible depending on division, it is not guaranteed. Little to no possibility of promotion. Continuous layoffs since 2017. Constant re-orgs.
