Fed's Powell says Wells Fargo asset cap to stay in place until problems fixed

Sept 22 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said on Wednesday that the Fed is closely monitoring efforts by Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) to fix its "widespread and pervasive" problems and that it would take appropriate actions if the bank failed to do so.

In 2018, the Federal Reserve ordered Wells Fargo to keep its assets below $1.95 trillion until it had improved its governance and risk controls following sales practice scandals. That constrains Wells Fargo's ability to make new loans. read more

Powell said on Wednesday that the bank's asset cap would stay in place until the firm has comprehensively fixed its problems, suggesting the bank had a ways to go before it would be allowed to expand in size.

"We're not going to remove that asset cap until that's done," he said.

A Wells Fargo spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this month, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency fined the bank $250 million for failing to properly pay back wronged customers as directed in a 2018 consent order. read more

The OCC also placed new restrictions on the bank's ability to expand its mortgage servicing business until it had addressed those shortcomings. At the time, Wells Fargo CEO Charles Scharf said the bank was still working on addressing "significant, longstanding deficiencies."

On Wednesday, Powell said the Fed was closely monitoring the bank's efforts to address its numerous issues, and would not hesitate to impose fresh penalties if it fails to meet its expectations.

**Doesn't sound like we’re anywhere close.

Wait, I thought with all the old leadership thrown under a bus and all these new folks we still don't have ethical leadership focused on fixing our sh*t? :-)

How is it that in basically 3 years we haven't address the issues in mortgage and many of the others. Seems to me the leadership in several places need to go along with a few layers down if we can't fix stuff. Yes, I get that Wells is huge, that politics are everywhere, that things are complex. But FFS we shoudl not be anywhere near where we are let alone facing $250MM in fines again.

Just to be clear on where I stand: it would give me great pleasure to see Charlie and our BOD publicly go down in a ball of flames.

Then, maybe, we can get some ethical and effective leadership in place who has a shared interest in making WFC a leader rather than a follower, a respected and admired company, and a great place to work which benefits all stakeholders rather than benefiting only the C-Suite.

The sooner this happens, the better for all of us.

Just a flex from the Fed so that Sen. Warren wouldn't hog the all the attention.

Granted that WF has been caught 8 times that we know of.

But you should on the bright side. Just think of the times that we HAVEN'T been caught!

@1tso+1cXubFgQ, maybe we used to love this company and hate what's become of it?

Excuse you @1tso, but there are literally thousands of people who tried to get management to do the right thing and were ignored, fired, or tormented.

The current crop of management is worse because they have made their overwhelming disdain for both employees and customers readily apparent.

Seeing people with power over the bank hold management accountable is satisfying when you actually care about something more than a paycheck, like principles, basic human decency, relationships and oh maybe customers too?

Anyone who enjoys seeing this type of news and is still collecting a paycheck from Wells Fargo should have their employment terminated, effective immediately.

It must be so miserable working for a company you hate that much. If you’re reading this and the top paragraph applies to you, just leave. You and the company will both be so much better off for it.

@1bzi

CJ has been hired and given a better opportunity than Charlie was given.

Mission accomplished.

Has there been any progress made on any front since Chainsaw started? Seems like all he’s done is execute the layoff plan that was in place when he started.

Why is this quote "news"? Did anyone really think the cap would be lifted before the work was done? Ok then, we already knew this.

Charlie has no interest in getting the cap lifted. He’s been here two years and no closer today than two years ago. He’s only interested in filling his and his buddies pockets!

The asset cap is coming close to its 4th birthday. The problems go back much further than 2018 and that raises the question of how much time the Fed is willing to watch this before they make moves.

The asset cap was merely an increase in the severity of punishment because dozens of consent orders and billions in fines were apparently not enough motivation.

It kind of looks like the asset cap isn’t much of a motivator either, because really for most of new management it’s only about personal enrichment anyway.

This month:
Wells Fargo has been caught red-handed cheating consumers.
Not once.
Not twice.
Not three times.
Not four times.
Not five times
Not six times.
Not seven times.
But eight times in recent history. That we know of.
It's time for real consequences.
