Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell is still among the best

Say what you will, but Dell is still among the best employers. I've worked at several other industry giants before and I know the true definition of a toxic culture. What we have is certainly not it. I think people are simply too sensitive these days and expect too much from their employers. What you should expect is to get paid for your work. Period.

Actually, you do not know you are in a toxic work environment while you are in the middle of it. Dell's culture is terribly toxic and I only realized it once I got out. Here are 4 examples of how poorly run that company truly is:

  1. My first manager was a complete no show at work. It was second shift and one of the many acquisitions. This person was supposed to be a TAM on first shift, but the second shift manager dropped dead and they were volu-told to take the job. So, this manager never showed up and we ran the second shift on our own. This was the least offensive.
  2. My second manager was part of a role change. The Teamlead had their hand so far up the manager's bu-t that you could see their fingertips in the manager's mouth. The T/L hated me. It was so bad that the T/L would undermine my decisions by going back to Support Engineers and telling them to do something different that I instructed. Also, the T/L would rip me apart in meetings to the point of where I would get phone calls from other attendees asking me if I was alright. In addition, the manager and T/L were involved in a relationship that was inappropriate. Eventually, the manager had a heart attack, was moved off of people management and the T/L was moved overseas.
  3. My third manager was just your run of the mill, garden variety type pi-s poor manager. This manager would make promises and reneg on them, steal ideas, only give praise to the a-s kissers and refuse to acknowledge good work from anyone who was not a favorite. I would have the EMEA team singing my praises on my work and I was asked for, but this manager would critique me on if I "correctly" profiled a case. In addition, they were in cahoots with a Support person who was trying to drive me out of the company.
  4. The Support person mentioned above is probably personality disturbed. This person worked on me for 9 months to gain my trust. The rationale behind this was the engineer needed an ally to fight with an overly aggressive account team. This person took my trust and turned it into a romantic gesture. It got to the point of where the engineer was flirting over IM but I put a stop to it. The engineer used me pure and simple. What was ironic is if the engineer simply let me do my job, the account team would have backed off anyway. Eventually, once the case closed, the engineer who gained my trust discarded me like toilet paper and I had to deal with the emotional aftermath. It was later on that I found out the engineer and manager number 3 were undermining me and also this engineer had played this game with others before. This engineer is poison and malignant.

It took years before I ended up with a good manager and I flourished. I gained back my reputation and when I gave notice about 10 months later, it hit many people hard. I was asked to stay, but explained that it was simply time for me to go.

So, if there really is HR on this forum, you have some really big freaking problems. Eventually, someone if going to sue the cr-p out of you as I reported several of the occurrences to HR with absolutely no changes. It is only a matter of time before there is a harassment charge involving either manager 3 or Support Engineer. Yes, the environment is toxic, abusive and psychological torture. The environment is sick and there needs to be a purge of the anti-social personalities that flourish in Dell.

Sometimes life is not about raises. new jobs and me me me me ambition. Some of us just want to do a good job and do well for our customers. We dont look for constant personal gain. I am happy to to do the work I am doing well and have challenges that can be met.

I earn enough at Dell and am not greedy or demanding more. I have good productivity because Im not commuting all day and the outcomes speak for themselves. Having people around you who are constantly personally ambitious is destructive to the team and company.

And . . all you have to do is look at the press, the stock price and the survival through COVID. We have done pretty good. If you dont want to be here, you arent forced to stay.
