Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

People don't want to work hard for free

When a company shows respect for their employees that helps boost employee morale. I don't think people mind working hard but they do mind working hard for free. Who doesn't want to feel like their hard work is being recognised or appreciated??! Without their employees a company would fail which many forget.

@vxu+1cWpMyNg hits the nail on the head.

@igzd, exempt status requires certain working conditions and salary levels.

Yes, you become exempt from overtime the moment that you demonstrate any abilities beyond clerical work. If you don’t make it in a year you probably should be pursuing union work and training in a trade, postal, or other shipping or apprenticeship blue collar opportunity.

@feoc,
I DID. And once a quarter I kicked in a free 20 hours on a weekend for DR tests and saw half the people I worked with weren't online Monday because their group got comp time.

I know a lot of people who don’t take time off because if they do, their work is just waiting for them when they get back AND in greater volumes. Some days it just feels like there’s not enough people to do the work yet management keeps telling us to do more with less. Operations in particular gets the biggest hit but there’s a ton of overhead whose fat can be trimmed. Something’s gotta give.

@feoc+1cYhx9aG Is correct. 50 to 60 hours is the norm for exempt (professional track employees exempt from overtime).

Actually, the majority of workers in the company for the last 30 years have worked 50-60 hours per week with no overtime…FOR FREE. If you don’t then count yourself as privileged and move on.

@9xrn, half the company is working at least an extra 5 hours a week for free since they forced us to accept a 40 hour work week instead of the 35 hour week we were hired for. Although we always joked that 40 hours would be a 10 hour cut because we were working so much.

@dvcp, I assume they mean to sit home and get enhanced unemployment and stimulus checks.

@8hds Please explain exactly how someone gets "paid for not working?" Yeah, if you're laid-off or fired you will be, but not if you walk away on your own...that's why a lot of disatisfied people are still here.

Who is working for free?

@8hds, do you cut and run every time the going get rough? That explains a lot. There is NOTHING wrong with sticking up for yourself and pointing out flaws in a company. In fact, criticism is imperative for the company to survive.

I never understand why the whiners here don’t leave. I think that this would be a horrible existence. Can anyone explain that to us? There has never been a better time to get a job or to get paid for not working.

Just want to understand your mentality…?

Apparently a one time monetary award for all employees will be announced soon.

Very few people leave the company voluntarily. BNY treats their employees like garbage and they keep coming back for more. Why should they care at all about boosting employee morale if they keep showing up and the work gets done.
