Out of the dozens of people I know who have resigned, I only know of two cases-one was promoted during the application process with a tech company and elected to leave anyway, and the other was directly countered when they turned in a resignation, also to a tech company but they were not an IT person at EM. They also chose to leave. Neither were hipo/management types.

I think the managers do try, but there is a limit to what they can do at their levels (i.e. they are not Dallas, none of us report to senior management), and each manager has limited political ammunition that they need to ration.

I'm from EMIT and voluteered twice last year to be made redundant, since I'm only 40, low CL and I have put in enough years for the retrenchment package to be a sweet, no-hard-feelings "breakup gift". Mid career folks like me can dust ourselves off, start somewhere else and even have a 25-year career in the new place. But I didn't get retrenched (many peers did). Instead I got a kindly pep talk from my manager and some encouragement of good opportunities here.

Funnily, my manager moved on to another role after the pep talk, and the waves of changes is still relentless - MSP, CS&I, and high regretted attrition, where the people who are around see our long-time, trusted networks disappearing. What I most value in EM, the people I've grown up with in the company, are leaving one by one. We get a lot of assurance that we will still be retained for higher value jobs, but I don't even know whether the managers can save themselves or if they believe what they say.

I know many people (managers and indiv contributors alike) live day-by-day with the hope that EM will regain some of its former glory. Maybe it's still a good place for the GBCs or Chem people whose business is doing well. But it's really hard for other individuals with some perspectives and awareness to want to stay, even if they try to retain us. In the end, what happens a year or fivedown the road is still down to luck.

I didn’t formally say I was leaving nor receive a formal counter, but I did magically get a CL change that I had already been told I wasn’t getting this year after I threw out some hints that I thought about leaving. And I was asked if there was any role I would like to be switched into much earlier than my move was planned for. (I’m in EMIT and <5 years)

The high attrition is what ExxonMobil senior leaders want. This is part of their plan and they want you to resign and leave. Their headcount just shrunk with their footprint. If they didn’t want people to leave, they would have tried stem the high attrition. The fact that they haven’t tried anything means they want people to leave.

I know some people and saw one do get counter offer (this one is in CS) but another one don't get counter offer (this one is in EMIT).

However, we are from low-cost GBC, maybe some of us are getting counter offer as our labor wage is low.

Countering is pointless. Experience shows once someone decides to leave a counter only delays the inevitable.

Agree that at the worker bee level, even if you are a true hi-po they don’t counter. Seen some folks with absolute golden tickets leave with no counter.

In EMIT, there have been meetings to offer kumbaya type of initiatives. Members of eLT teams got together and threw in ideas how to provide support for junior team members, should be alerted to the early signs of people leaving etc etc.

It was shallow as fcuk. They probably had to idea even many of these eLT members are leaving as well.

I would be very surprised at the comment about Europe. The voluntary redundancy in mainland Europe was significantly over subscribed, and my understanding was that those that didn't get it just had to remain in post on their current basis.

In Europe, there is voluntary scheme offered during the lay-off period few months ago. However there are some employees who volunteer to go but their application did not get accepted by management. I am pretty sure they received some sort of retention bonus/promotion/new job as an incentive to stay.

Short answer is no. No one at worker bee level was actually retained with any counter offer. Lower level mgmt pretends that they started to care but my observation tells me that higher attrition has always been the goal.
