Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Worst company I've ever worked for

I've worked at several F500 companies, and IBM has been the worst BY FAR. I was lured here by an executive who offered me a generous salary, but I'm already ready to check out within a year. I knew my first week here I made a mistake. Some things I've noticed:

  • The constant changing of leadership and direction of the teams. My manager has changed twice within a year! And our leadership's priorities have already shifted. Jesus Christ! You don't achieve significant gains by constantly changing your people and direction. This really isn't normal guys.
  • Our products really suck. I mean, jeez our clients only use it because it's legacy and too painful to migrate off of. No one sees us as a real partner. IBM Cloud is a joke and everyone knows it. I've never worked at a company that has such awful products and refuses to listen to their customers. IBM Cloud is not something our clients asked for! They want our software to be SaaS (not on prem), no more audits, and better customer service.
  • Just a really toxic environment where everyone is so afraid of losing their jobs. This is my first time experiencing anything like this. I've worked mostly at tech companies that are growing and layoffs never happened (only fired for poor performance).

I'm already applying to leave. For those who've been here for a long time, just know that your misery is not just you. This whole company is messed up and if you worked at a real tech company, you'd know that we're going downhill real fast.

The OP's audit comment made me sit up. It's a "we don't trust you" thing going on. The worst part of it is that IBM expects business partners to be complicit in the whole thing. Partners are not meant to be police. They build up a close relationship only for it to be shot down when it suits IBM.

In GM, we're moving away from covering any accounts outside of our top customers. We're outsourcing our sales to business partners. I can tell you that no other tech company operates like this. Focusing only on your top 100-200ish accounts and ignoring all that white space? that means they're already circling the wagon on what they have and acknowledging that growth from new accounts isn't coming. If this isn't a sign to leave IBM NOW, I don't know what is.

The senior exec team is mostly IBM lifers who have never seen how it's done at other large corps. The BOD are mostly nursing home aged who retired from exec roles at customer companies decades ago. The stock is owned by widows and orphans who see it as a replacement for treasury bonds and only care about the dividend. I gave up fighting it awhile ago, it's not going to change.

i started a while back, and it wasn't too bad a company if I'm honest. but started to notice around 2011 that things were not going well, when we were getting RFI's, RFP's etc asking for SAAS and PAAS solutions and IBM just stared into the upcoming headlights, still now, hardly any SAAS in the portfolio, still not many new clients just old ones.
It appears the people making decisions, do not look at what the market needs, and/or are too slow.

can you share which companies you came from ?

who was the exec who lured with generous salary.

Some of us folks here have salary from 2000s and still take lion's share of work for the team. :(

Completely agree. Was headhunted from a competitor and I can clearly see why IBM is trailing the market. I’m ready to go back to where I came from. It wasn’t until my clients encouraged me to leave that I realized just how bad this place is.

I know several people who say that they knew they made a mistake their first week here. Good luck.
