PIP is just a layoff in disguise.

One of my co workers dropped from good to NSI this cycle. The three choices were PIL leave Nov 30, retire work until Nov 30 or go through PIP. Their feedback was excellent and work was done. The supervisor had no real explanation for the low rating. Supervisor said the system picked or flagged you. My coworker made the mistake of telling the supervisor and manager they needed to work a few more years. Now my group is short handed and this will affect the safe operation of our unit. The supervisor seemed mad that the co worker did not beg for their job and do the PIP. Well now we are interviewing and trying to hire a contractor to replace them. The supervisor even told the PIPed co worker that they are looking for someone with their skills. I could understand the PIP or layoff if our work was drying up or moving to India but it is not. They are getting rid of a employee and getting a contractor to replace them. My co worker asked if they could be moved or used some where else. They were told no and could only do the three options. The company knows if they PIP a retirement eligible person the will be offended and leave. Especially if there is no good reason to PIP them.
No one is safe. I use to think I would be able to work until full ret. 60 but now if I make it to 56 or 57 I will be lucky. I know of several people from the last round and this round of layoffs I mean PIPs that were replaced by younger lower paid contractors. I was told we have a hiring freeze and we can get as many contractors as we need.

To add on, this disguised lay-off also happened in the Far East as well. Many of the experienced and “valued” employees (before all this started), were also classified as “NSI” and then forced to leave via the PIP process and not given any “retrenchment” payouts. I would understand the Company’s action, if they do this to a truly underperforming employee. But to do this to a 20+, 30+ and even 40+ employees, how can such employees “hide” for so long and not laid off much earlier?? They may reach a plateau of their peak performance. Who doesn’t as we grow older! The older workers may not be physically more agile in doing the “manual” work but when it comes to solving issues, decision making, they are definitely on TOP and this can compensate for the lower agility. Most companies, if not all, except the PRESENT ExxonMobil, value experienced employees. What is happening here in ExxonMobil, it is going in the wrong path. The employee past contributions are not appreciated and recognised at all. It’s a shame to see things having come to this state. I see this as the fault of the Current Management and not the past Management, who truly believe that it’s employees are truly the Company’s asset. I cannot deny that some not so good business decisions were made by the past Management but the employees were still treated as a valuable asset in trying to turn the company around. If the current Management still do not see this “fiasco” that is damaging the image to attract excellent talent, I dare not think where ExxonMobil will be in the near future ….. another great company that become a FAILED Company and become a model Case Study in business schools on how a great Company can be destroyed/collapsed? The “Titatnic” is sinking and some drastic measures need to “right it’s course”.

It’s time for the current Management to “wake up” immediately before it reaches the “road of no return” and we ex-employees can look back on our lives with EM with little or no pride at all.

About myself….an ex-employee with 40 years of working experience who worked for a GREAT company until now. I am thankful to ExxonMobil for the wealth I built up to “retire” comfortably. My working life was up-ended by this very sad state of action by the Current Management recently and I cannot see how the current and future employees can say the same, unless a CHANGE is done immediately.

@OP - this isn’t news. Where were you last year, when the same process occurred ? This happened to a lot of good people in 2020 - were you here then, to sympathise with the NSI’d ?

Got laid-off in February. Never received a bad rap or complaint, received many kudos, widely recognized as a subject expert across EM, had outstanding reputation for what I had done in nearly 10 years. Upon receiving the lay-off notice, told my supervisor, manager - it's unexpected and heart-breaking. Spent the last two weeks to get all aspects of my work in excellent order so the next person shouldering my work could have an easy transition. I understand that my being laid-off had no bearing on my performance. It's EM decided that I'm no longer of use to the business. Rolled over 401K to IRA, took pension as lump sum. Everything is under my control. Now, I'm happier than ever. Good luck everyone. It's just good business. Please, for your own sake, don't take it too personal. You won't regret. EM's practice is despicable, to say the least. Then, where do you find an amiable corporation in such situation? It's a sad reality.

@1wpt+1cbfDjlH You are allowed to tell co-workers, that's your right. However, they are not allowed to tell the group what they did to you. Given that these are fake PIPs (really layoffs), it's better to tell your co-workers what happened. You will need them as references, and the truth should come out. What the company is doing is ethically wrong.

@rys+1cbfDjlH PIP’d person here. My supervisor has gone as far as to ask if I’ve told anyone, pointing out that it’s a “private personnel matter”. They’re clearly trying to intimidate me into not telling anyone else for fear of the truth coming out. Little do they know plenty of people are going to know my side of the story and what a terrible person they are before I walk out the door one last time.

I want to relate something else here. My recently piped co worker has not told any one their true story except me. They are embarrassed about the situation and have only said they are retiring early. My other coworker told everyone about their PIP and the unfairness of it. I think PIPed people should tell everyone and give some warning to others. Exxon wants these people to go away quietly and not spread the truth and fear. Our supervisor cowers away everytime he sees my PIPed coworker.

MOH was not exempt from the 8% despite all of the nursing staff, and a very few MD’s, who worked their a**es off through all of 2020. The head of SSHE announces what a wonderful job MOH did during the pandemic yet, 8% of the staff had to go. Experienced clinic staff (who do the actual work) are leaving in droves and now that COVID is rearing back up, expect more to exit and then be replaced by contractors. Insane!!!!

This is a great add to this site. Thanks OP for posting. And well done the way you explained the story while still protecting people’s privacy (i.e. no names).

When this happened to me, I had no idea what was really going on. I could not talk to anyone about it except my supervisor, and they would tell me practically nothing. The more they can isolate you, the more they can manipulate you. They want to keep their dirty process in the dark.

I encourage people to keep posting the dirty unethical methods EM is using to kick good people out the door. That is the only way to force them to change.

If the NSI program was purely to improve the workforce, then every group would have 8% target. I know of a group that has had over 30% attrition since March 2021 and they got exempt from the 8% PIP because they were already at their reduced headcount target.
