Mass exodus

Is everyone else seeing a mass exodus of colleagues? I work in C&CS and every week I see someone leave. I hope it gets bad enough where even AK realizes it’s going downhill

I have just officially announced to the management that I am leaving IBM. One of the happiest days of my life. I was ready to accept any job that pays even less than IBM, but ended up with a contract with more than double increase of total compensation.

Anything that would take years to get ramped up on is going away. This is one of the reasons for the giant tech change of the last decade or so. Companies can't keep people around do to market opportunities so they must shift everything to open source and other things that you should have been exposed to outside of Company ABC. This is ultimately what the biggest challenge has been for everyone, switching technologies across the board to something learnable from within or without. Though most in my experience expect nowaday you have all the skills already! Times have changed.

What!? That’s malarkey. If it takes you that long you sûck. And if th tech and project takes that long, it needs to be canned.

I suppose you've only been exposed to simple, easy-to-learn things. That's unfortunate, as the most interesting (and job-security-enhancing) and profitable technologies do indeed take many years to master. Another barrier to entry. You may be correct in that IBM has less and less of the complicated, deep stuff, but if you only know easy-to-learn stuff then you are extremely replaceable.

“ nothing against new grads but lot of teams using ibm tools/technology has ramp up time of 1-2 years for example.”

Okay I guess I'm on the rare side then. I work on a half-decent product (IMO) and my team does well but the lack of motivation around here really sucks. I'm sorry if you aren't being paid fairly while I am being paid my personal market rate (could be higher but its all good).

'Why so much sh-t on new grads? Came into IBM with more certs and technical skills than a good chunk of my team. '

For GBS projects, it's extremely rare to get a resume from a CBDer who has a BSCS or MSCS degree. Most are used as PA, BA, scrum masters or testers on our projects. The solution technology is complex, so you need solid full stack developers along with solution and infrastructure architects, and these skills don't magically appear overnight. I don't know what you do in any software development where new grads can write production quality ready code better than 'a good chunk of my team' unless your team is not development.

"Most certifications are useless"

This is false. There are countless certifications out there that are incredible and carry lots of weight among hiring committees at every company.

It doesn't make sense to not give experienced people who are more productive atleast same amount of money as new grads.
This is sad truth of most tech companies which don't actively give refreshers.
You'll experience this once you have stayed here for couple of years.

Also,most certifications are useless.

Anyway, i am already outta here. Market is hot and i am not staying for peanuts

I gave notice this past week ... it's not even the money ... I just couldn't take the toxic work environment at IBM anymore.

Maybe we're getting paid more and promoted faster because we're actually motivated to work and putting in the hours? When all the other senior "engineers" are off by 3pm, is it really a bad idea to motivate the employees that are actually going to do the work?

Huge mistake forcing relocation and even discussing a RTO.
Nobody is playing that game anymore. Too many opportunities elsewhere and usually with a pay increase,
They can have all the fun they like at the office masking up, only one person in washroom at a time. What a joke

all the companies are on a hiring spree in usa and there's mass exodus from everywhere: systems, gbs you name it. job market is super hot

Ibm will soon have to beg for people to come work here if they don't fix their id--tic pay structure.
(New grads getting paid higher than people with 3 yoe).

For those who are staying, the new so called leaders that they face chosen are disingenuous and misogynistic

You're better off waiting for a package, which is inevitable, eventually. Why leave free money on the table?
