Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Anyone plan to quit after EOY 2021?

I am working at a low-cost GBC location for 5 years. I am planning to leave at EOY 2021. Most of my friends/colleagues/bosses already left. I am the only one who carry the team consist of new joiners right now and already fed up. The reason I am still here is to wait for raise, in hope it will increase my base salary.

@OP Quit and do what, exactly?

XOM is a toxic company in a toxic industry, but there’s very few positions outside of O&G that offer equal or better pay for the same amount of work. The job market is hyper-competitive, and most offers outside of O&G (if/when you get one) are well below the value of the qualifications of the seeker.

New technologies have devalued experience and expertise, and put US employees in direct competition with those in peripheral countries, creating a race to the bottom in salaries. XOM knows this, as does every other corporate employer, and they leverage it to their advantage.

@epg+1ckpL0Kf this is exactly what happened over time with GBCs, and I would expect exactly the same things to happen as the global economy shifts. The India GBC will gradually improve in quality and capability over the years while the country becomes more expensive, and the India GBC will eventually be downsized and replaced by wherever is the next cheapest place.

Man St. John’s computer support was the best. They were competent, helpful, and you could understand them. I never had a problem that wasn’t fixed in under 5 mins. The current people who answer the phone for computer support are clearly reading a script, and you can barely hear them due to phone line quality. Rarely fix problems the first time

Well GBC, learn from Moncton and Saint John BSC.

That BSC was once booming, and then XOM found a lower cost location, and most people from that BSC have since been fired.

That could be you too, once your GBC is deemed to be too expensive, and they will move the jobs to the next low cost location.....

And there are lower lower cost areas.

They are sending ALL types of work to these.

GBC employees are deemed to be only doing transactional stuff that is too low value for us.

Honestly if you want my humble opinion, HQ doesn’t give a diddly squat about GBCs. They see it as like you mentioned a low-cost job dump and that’s it. The idea of a GBC is predatory: pay less for a job an American would have to get fairly compensated for. There are clearly differences between being an American employer vs. a GBC employee and you will never get away from this stigma, even if you get to grow in your career and hopefully come to the US as an expat or something alike. I had managers in my career that would openly brag about the fact those people were low cost and supposed to do only the “leg work” while all that matters would stay in the US. Take it for what you want.
