Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Is there worse?

Seriously are there worse companies out there than XOM? The way I see people talk here you’d think this is the bottom of the barrel. Been going on my 5th year and while it’s not perfect I’m not at all dissatisfied. Are my chances of being PiPed the same as everyone else? YES. But I’m prepared for it. I’m banking everything I can and when my time comes I’m not going to give this company the power to fill me with bitterness. You shouldn’t either because life is short.

I just interviewed at a competitor. Yes, there’s worse. Stay away from O&G period if you’re looking to make a move.

It’s not the worse company, this board is just an echo chamber. You come looking for lay-off info, you leave wondering why DW f—-ed your wife and lit your house on fire.

My grandfather and father were both Executive level for Standard Oil and Exxon when they retired. They retired comfortably, but I don't have a million dollar trust fund.
Neither of them would respect this company today and especially the Executives.

I've taken advantage of the legacy to some degree but I'm leaving voluntarily soon.
After 20 years. I am not an Executive.

OP, good for you! I did the same and retired nicely. Follow this rules, as a minimum:

1) Never, ever stop looking for the next job ( I worked for numerous oil companies before retiring; always moving on when I got a better offer.)

2) No company cares about you or your career beyond their bottom line. Fact of life. Face it. You are in charge of your own career. No one else gives a sh!t except your family, maybe.

3) Save like you are going to lose your job tomorrow . The fatter your savings account the more power you have.

4) Keep you network alive and fresh.

Do these things and you will be able to say FU to any company you dislike!

Frankly, the worst part is having my kids born and 'educated' in TX.
Plan to alleviate/eliminate that evil soon.
The oldest is just starting 7th.

It will still be on their passports for life.
Hopefully not their neurons.

EM is probably in the top 5 of the worst - so yes.
Not only poisoning employees but the rest of the planet - willingly - for at least 30 years.
The ethyl lead situation from the 1930-70s was covered up as well.
At least that only mutated babies near the plants.
Widespread sl------r may not have been the objective in the beginning -
but isn't that what money-grubbing corporate socialism really all about?

Maybe Goldman Sachs is number one, though.

OP - this is how I sounded at 5 years in.
The older you get, the longer you are there, the more that you are knocked down, the sadder it becomes.
I worked for other companies before EM. None operated with such questionable behind the scenes BS.

OP it’s great that you are being proactive about future finances and not reactive the day you are told you know longer work here .
Everyone is going to have an opinion about the company and in the long run it really doesn’t matter what it is .

The longer you are at EM, the more you will realize just how rigged the system is. Probably same at other companies.

Executives play favorites and promote twats around you that do not deserve it. Certain people move up ranking due to minority status. People take credit for your hard work. Sponsored people get the higher profile jobs where nothing bad will stick to them. Sponsored people get transferred quickly off jobs going badly so nothing sticks to them. Sponsored people get away with not doing anything substantial then keep top ranking and his Supervisor dinged for not providing the right challenge for such a capable (sponsored) person.

It adds up over the years.

Wait till it happens to you. I see myself in you when I thought I was on top of the chain but I was mistaken. In a blink of an eye, my livelihood was gone. My advise to you and others: wake up.
