Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

I'm satisfied with my job here

It's the best I've had so far, and I've worked at three major banks and one regional bank during my more than twenty years long career. It bothers me when people put down BNY Mellon when they have no idea what it's really like to work for the likes of WFC or SunTrust (former.) Learn to appreciate what you have.

Your exactly the type of "Yes" person they're looking for! Best of Luck! You'll go far, assuming the company is around after its run through the ground in another year or two!

12 years is not enough. You may live to BNY made horrors beyond your comprehension.

Sh-t company. Negative real (after inflation) raises if you even get one, stock has moved sideways for 20 years, new CEO every 3 years, quarterly layoffs. Only reason BNY is still in business is that they are the only custodial bank around because every other “bank” left the industry.

Got let go from BNY Mellon this week after many many years, during a time where they are hiring much cheaper less talented people into the group. Which I spend the last 6 months training. Disgusted how things are playing out. The New York bases company will soon be more India based than anything soon.

Finance here. I’m in a pretty good position with good management and good working relationships with colleagues but I would jump ship fast if my role ever ended up in operations.

I gotta be honest, my experience has been so so. Have had good direct bosses that have been pretty transparent since I got to know them on a personal level and watch them struggle with the directives that have been dished to them. I have found the people at a level M and above have mostly been self serving from my interactions. They don't speak up even if they believe a decision could affect team performance because they don't want to rock the boat and put their own job in jeopardy. They then blame the guys in the trenches for bad outcomes.

Whatever you do, don't take off those rose colored glasses. The reality of this company will scare you.

Your satisfied with 1% raises when the bank made billions in 1 quarter? That’s sad or you have low expectations.

I agree with the comment below, it very much depends on the group, team, manager you work with at any company. Speaking as a former employee of BNYM, I was hired out of college and was treated like sh1t for 2 years until they finally laid me off this past year. Now I'm working for a BB and getting paid 50% more than I was at BNYM.

Everyone's experience is different (if I was hired into a different group at the bank I wouldn't think so negatively about the whole company).

I agree. Too many peoples' glass is half empty for sure. Although, individual experiences can vary widely though depending on team, manager, business segment, ability to do their job well, etc. Culture matters at the team level. I've been with other financial institutions as well, and each one of them had people with similar grievances, headaches, etc. Personally, BNYM has been very good for me. I'm happy here.

Some of us have worked at other places and BNYM long enough to know it’s ridiculous here and getting more ridiculous as the days past. What used to seem good here is no more and they are proving everyday they don’t care about employees or even the customers
