How the tables have turned..

Took PIL from XOM in July of 2020 under what I perceived as very unfair and biased circumstances. Have now been with my new company for a little over a year.

I now sit in during interviews and am involved with vetting the applicants for certain positions within my area. Lo and behold, I receive a resume from an ex-XOM co-worker who heavily participated in the toxicity that is XOM kool-aid culture..

Needless to say, that individual will not be getting selected for an interview.

Current XOM employees, take this as a PSA. People don't forget. You know who you are.

Good for the OP. As someone who has worked for several companies, I have had similar experiences. Even XOM would ask my opinion of someone I had worked with at a previous company. The last thing you want to do is recommend someone to your new company who is going to be a problem. I had three categories. (1) Yes, bring them in for an interview meant I think highly of them. (2) No, I wouldn't hire them if I thought they were bad. Many people were in the third category, people who were competent at their jobs and wouldn't be difficult to work with. For these people, I would say, I think they are definitely worth 30 minutes of your time for a screening phone interview.

One thing I hated at XOM was what I will call "Sham Interviews". XOM management had already decided who they were going to hire due to a prior personal relationship, but Human Resources insisted that there be three candidate interviewed onsite even if for practical purposes two of the three didn't have a chance. This happened to me twice at XOM but never at the other two companies I worked at. I always felt bad for candidates that took vacation days from their current jobs to interview for a position they had zero change of getting.

OP here again.

I just want to make something clear - this recommendation had absolutely zero to do with any intents at a retaliation attempt.

If my experiences with this applicant were different than what they were, and this person was great to work with, they would have received my endorsement.

Unfortunately, the opposite was true in this case. I would not strip a good candidate of an opportunity just because they worked for a particular employer. In this case, I actually worked with this applicant and my experiences with them were not very pleasant.

Hence, the PSA. It's pretty easy actually, just don't be sh!tty to other people because people will always remember the impression you left on them.

Me - I've had a different experience with my new company - about 35 diverse engineers.
My GeoTech position includes screening of applicants in the area.
If I see EM on the resume, especially recently, that is a plus to me.

But when I see BP, Chevron, Occidental, Aramco, Total, you name it -
they go to the round file.
Those companies have destroyed our planet!!

Seems like the persons working in new companies are explaining how they are helping their new companies avoid toxic shitheads from EM. Nothing about stopping good EM persons from getting employed.

I have heard of many instances in which former EM employees at new companies refer EM employees to their new company and poach from EM.

Same exact thing happened to me several years ago. Boss in NewCo hands me a resume from an Exxon guy, and asks me if I knew him. NewCo boss was a good guy. I said “let me tell you a story” and told him all about this toxic guy.

He thanked me for helping us avoid making a hiring mistake. You do your new company a service by helping them avoid XOM toxic waste. It’s not a conflict of interest, it’s the opposite…and it’s a small world.

What's really funny is Exxon thought that in 2020 they were getting rid of the worst of the bunch, but most people who chose PIL versus PIP were simply misunderstood and had marketable skills.

I do sometimes wonder how the kiss a-s who spent so much time bad mouthing other employees has progressed. Has management's pet bit the hand that feeds yet?

@scd. Those are qualifications. Their experiences were similar to others in the pool.

Plus we had a lot of applicants so we needed to narrow it down to 10 phone screens. My recommendation was part of that narrowing process.

@OP You’re supposed to be choosing people based only on their qualifications, not your assessment of their personality. Apparently some of XOM has rubbed-off.

I’m in the same position: I sit for interviews, and in O&G it’s inevitable that I’ll come across someone I know. In those cases I recuse myself, because it’s the professional and ethical thing to do. Everyone is entitled to a fair assessment.

OP here. As much as my 3 year experience with XOM (as an experienced hire) left a very sour taste in my mouth, it's very atypical for me to engage in vengeful type behavior. My recommendation didn't come from that place.

Effective teamwork and communication skills are crucial to that position. This applicant, based on my experiences working with them, did not meet that prerequisite. They would also not be a cultural fit with us. Again, based off my experiences with them.

As stated in the OP, this is just a PSA to those currently indoctrinated by XOM culture. People do not forget the impression you left on them.
