Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Is it worth the effort to get a promotion?

I did my best to get a promotion, which I still haven’t gotten. Lately, I've been thinking about whether it's worth making such an effort at all. A colleague who got a promotion immediately went to another company, he used the promotion here to get a better opportunity at another company.

Try spending more effort brown nosing and running your mouth in as many meetings as possible instead of doing actual work.

It is definitely a nice bump in pay (stock), but I agree with others that say you should also focus on building your skills too, that way you can give yourself more opportunities, including those that do not depend on intel.

I kicked a-s and was the best on a team that had a couple people 2 grades higher than me. My manager asked for promotion and was denied by VP. The VP has no idea what the he-l I work in. I got a 4% raise only and no promo.

I changed to a new org and a job of less importance and critical and than got a promo.

Maybe you should feel out other roles.

I think there’s a balance; Intel definitely had no problem letting 20 people put in overtime for 1 open position. I also think that too much emphasis is put on presentations. Intel should discourage people from putting hours into making the perfect presentation. At a certain point, if the message is already clear, nothing is gained by having a perfectly polished presentation except extra mouse clicks.
I think it’s worth it to work for a promotion but not at the expense of other areas of your life.

Getting a promo at Intel is not about effort, all it takes is to be from the same village as the VP.

My manager put me up for a promotion, but it was denied by the skip level (a VP). I knew then the writing was on the wall and I left a year later. When I left, I liquidated all my INTC and bought NVDA and AMD as an FU fund to Intel. That was probably my best stock investment in my life LOL. 3 years later INTC is still basically the same stock price and NVDA and AMD went to the moon.

Depends. You either kiss a— at Intel to get the promo, or you have the skill to get out now. If you have no skill, you can only do the former.
