Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I stayed here too long

How long would you recommend a person who has just come here and is looking for experience to stay here? Unfortunately, I think I stayed too long and lost a lot of time here. Now that I look back, I really regret my decision. I don’t even know why I allowed myself to stay here so long and stagnate. The most important thing is to know when to look for a better opportunity and leave.

If you’re 50+ and knocking the tech industry I think I sold you your phone and transferred all your stuff for 2 hours.

You sound very pessimistic and negative. I was recently promoted and I’m not a diversity candidate. You are the one drinking Verizon kool-aid though? I’m just saying in my “inexperience” working at a tech company is light years ahead of working at Verizon. Ageism is alive and well at Verizon too btw. It sounds like you just had a bad experience at whatever tech co you supposedly worked at.

Yes, I have. Age discrimination is rampant at tech companies, and get ready for promotions based on diversity quotas. You sound very naive and inexperienced... keep drinking the corporate kool-aid and comeback when you are 50

Have you worked for an actual tech company though? I left vzw for a tech co and it’s not even close. Management shows compassion, I have better perks than vz, and work/life balance is great. Stop parroting some article you read. You’re talking out of your a** and it shows.

Who is defending Verizon? Leave for a tech company and you'll find out that publicly traded companies pretty much operate in the same manner. Politics and bureaucracy.

Google is far too bureaucratic to create technical products internally. Android, Youtube, Nest, Doubleclick, Waze, and Deepmind were all acquisitions.

My point was that if you want to want to work in a performance based culture and avoid incompetent bureaucracy... you'll have to work at a Silicon Valley startup

The fact that someone is defending Verizon over ANY real tech company is pretty funny. No matter what d-mb article you read you have no clue what it’s like to work at FB or Amazon. I wasn’t referring to those specific companies either, there are hundreds of great tech companies out there. Verizon doesn’t hold a candle to any.

AMZN will force you out before receiving your stock. Corporate AMZN employees look like Vietnam vets walking around in shock. FB will put you in a junior role, and work you to death before also pushing you out. Don't fall for the hype... it's called propaganda

What about the diversity quotas at each level in most publicly traded tech companies?

@4kae+1cypxBxQ AMZN, GOOG and FB more than make it up with their stock grants and its appreciation for any cr-p you will face

VZ cannot be used in the same breath as the majors.

"There are other companies [mainly in the tech space] that are 1000% better than Verizon."

Facebook and Amazon are notorious for abusing employees. Many employees at Facebook complain about the politics and trivial work. Don't believe the hype. Microsoft is also known for intense politics and diversity quotas at every level.

There are other companies [mainly in the tech space] that are 1000% better than Verizon. You have no clue what you’re talking about, especially if you still work at vzw. You won’t know until you leave lifer guy.

Depends what department you are in. I'm just trying to vest my 401k match and hit 2 more bonus cycles so I can buy a house.

Would you rather work at Amazon with people experiencing PTSD after 6 months? The quarterly layoffs and fighting to keep your job.

Verizon is no different from other publicly traded companies... some are just better at marketing themselves as "innovative & hip". If you have the skills go the Silicon Valley startup route... look for startups in the Bay Area with the potential to IPO or be acquired.

If you are in a strong union contract stay unless you get alot better.
Otherwise i think you start looking after six months to a year. It is a good entry level “have a job” to put on your resume and is at least better than nothing.

The same reason anyone said. We made money and got paid. People are questioning it because not it's all the same sh-t as always but worse in every aspect possible and we are barely making money and not getting paid.
