@exo - I feel your pain. I was the main EMRE support person (technical and chemical engineering) for the new grease plant in Jurong. The project leads wanted me out there, to help troubleshoot during start-up. My manager told me that for “political reasons”, I couldn’t go - so I had to assist remotely.

Three months later, I was told that I was “too busy” to continue giving manufacturing support. Three months after that, one by one, they started to send every other member of my group for 2-3 week assignments to gain experience and to “support” the grease unit in Jurong. Two of those sent over there had been with the company less that a year.

I spoke to a couple of my colleagues (separately) when they came back. Neither of them understood why they had been sent out there. They enjoyed the 2-3 week “holiday”, but didn’t do anything, didn’t help with anything and didn’t learn anything while they were out there. They just sat in the plant control room while the operators made grease.

EM certainly knows how to waste money while punishing the technical experts.

@exo - something similar happened to me, but not for a step-out project. I was heavily involved in technical science and engineering support for the Grease Plant in Singapore. I was asked to go out there to assist with the star-up, in case of manufacturing problems.

Just before it was about to start initial production, I was told by my manager that we wouldn’t be sending anyone over there for “political reasons”. 3 months later, I was taken off the project (the excuse was that I had too much on my plate) and then starting a month later, the rest of my group went - one-by-one - for 2-3 week assignments to Singapore to “assist” with production. None of them had any experience with supporting the Singapore grease unit and when I asked two of my colleagues (separately), they admitted that they didn’t know why everyone was going there. They had nothing to do, they couldn’t give any input or advice, and although they enjoyed the trip, it was a complete waste of time and money.

Manager told me a few years ago I do a great job and my customers love me and have great feedback of my support. But, needed to do step out activities in order to not fall in ranking. . So I volunteered for a project that is of personal interest to me. 3 months in, manager tells me that I am getting good feedback from LT on my participation on this project. 6 months later I get a call from project manager that I have too much on my plate and I am being removed from the project to allow me to do my “day job”. I was stunned. When I asked who would be replacing me, I had no words to learn my manager was replacing me. Right before a scheduled international trip for the project group participants. To top it off, she brought 2 of the worst performers along with her to the project. Both of whom are now the top ranked employees in the department and designated “SME”. What a joke!!! Nothing but complaints are received from customers of both of these “SME”. This department deserves to fail and as a support department, should be outsourced, which is what has been recommended from 3rd party assessments of this department done in the past.

People should keep resigning and then these managers will have to the work themselves. Can't wait to see that day coming.

More important skill than taking undue credit — for managers to keep moving up — is successfully foisting blame for their own errors on others.

This has been noticeable for at least five years but for the last two years I agree it has progressed to a sickening level.
