@2rdf, I’ve seen similar news reports. I guess there’s a trend of companies experimenting with shorter work weeks to deal with burnout and its cousin “boreout”. From what I’ve read the optimal work week is 35 or 36 hours. Companies are switching to four 8 hour days while still paying the same. People might think this would decrease productivity and output but it does the opposite because employees end up so much happier and more engaged.

@2rdf

Yeah, ask any Nike sr manager and they'll tell you 3 day work weeks and taking the summer off is even better for morale. I mean, they'll still p*ss and moan about how hard it is working at Nike.

I read an interesting article this morning suggesting that when companies move to a four-day work week (four 10-hour days) the impact on employees’ well-being and how they feel about their jobs changed dramatically for the better. They cited one study that showed making this single change reduced attrition by 70% while increasing productivity 12% in a very short period of time. They called it a “no-brainer” and said it makes no sense whatsoever that in 2021 we still follow a work week model adopted for 20th century manufacturing companies.

Why is it so effective in increasing employee well-being? Turns out just having that one extra day each week to tend to “life” is absolutely huge. For a lot of us we spend all weekend scurrying around tending to errands and chores with almost no time to actually relax and recharge. Come Monday most people do not at all feel rested and relaxed before stepping back on the hamster wheel. This leads to burnout, depression, and a whole host of other mental ills.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m experiencing burnout myself. I like my job and like working at Nike but not sure how much longer I can do it. The hours and workload are brutal and my husband has noticed “you’re not ‘you’ anymore”. That’s usually not a good sign.

Please take care of your mental well being, there’s only one of you. Nike’s MO? Use and discard. Not worth a mental break in my opinion, some of us waited too long…..

Your sanity isn't worth a job at Nike. Trust me, the gold rush is long over (both at Nike and Portland in general) and there's better places to work outside of the berm that won't f**k with your mental health.
