What was the actual cause for the outage?

To a non IT person, no. Within IT, if you read the issue report, you'd roll your eyes as his blame is an indication that he is a business suit, not an IT guy.

I am one of those competent Tech leaders who left recently. They keep getting id--ts from outside and paying them twice of what insiders earn and put on top of insiders. I had enough of it. When I quit they were shocked .. LOL

Got a job outside paying twice of what WF paid me. Really happy and mentally healthy.

Was the real reason a material difference from the purported reason?

Yes, SVB gave a reason in his "apology" and the reason for the outage was wrong.

In tech. SVB's team is losing people they don't want to lose.

Tech has had layoffs, like everywhere else. But it is just some fat trimming. The real downsizing is with the move to new data centers and then to the cloud which will ravage infrastructure teams.

They aren't near that point yet, but have been bleeding major talent.

The backlash this week in tech has been strong. Managers all over are afraid of losing their best employees which will hurt keeping the place afloat even more.

Mid and upper level managers aren't getting directions from the executives on what to tell employees about work from home. The executives don't have a clue. They know they need to push SVB's strategy, but they know if they give direction now under that strategy, the exodus will be damaging.

SVB's incompetence has management in a jam. They can't afford to lose more talent and know that SVB's strategy cripples their ability to hire good replacements.

@1fgy That's even more hilarious, then.

They've been working on "natural attrition" for 2 years and are still disappointed that it isn't happening at the pace they want?

What kind of geniuses, do a retrospective a year after their plans failed wildly, and double down on those plans? They've literally paid 2-year severances to people they expected to quit, but are not obligated to pay even more should they lay those people off now.

This speaks horribly for the path of this company. We're not mismanaged, our leadership is completely detached from rational thinking.

Fair enough, but someone on here said the reason given, which is information that would be considered internal use, isn't the actual reason.

@1vid if you have to ask, or you don't know where to look, then you have no right to that information.

@1pmp

We are not even close to the attrition targets, which is why we're continuing rounds of layoffs. They are literally disappointed that there are not more employees quitting.

"The employee losses are at a greater rate than was planned."

In Tech, or in general?

Who is SVB?

SVB messed up big time with his location strategy.

The employee losses are at a greater rate than was planned. But if he backs away from it, he exposes himself as an id--t after so much money was laid out for the location strategy. So he is just going to double down on it and middle management gets squeezed by his mistake.

"the actual cause of the issue"

The best part about it was he even managed to get the actual cause of the issue wrong in that 'apology', lmao. You can't make this stuff up at this point.

It was a non-apology tbh.

He did everything possible to apologize without directly apologizing. Why can't this management team just talk straight?

His "apology" isn't a big deal. He communicated what happened, they fixed it and will try to keep things like this from happening. It's expected given how broad it was.

Sorry for what? I didn't receive any communication so a little context would be helpful.

“We’re sorry, our bad.”

Apparently they will take a deep dive but unfortunately not off a cliff.

That "apology" should have been more of an apology and should also have been sent as an e-mail directly to our inboxes.
