Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel vs. TSMC and Samsung, an Objective Assessment

Intel has always been carried by the d-mb luck of X86, handed to it by IBM. In Intel's heyday, the TD head was able to pick the innovations coming from IBM and adapt them to the mass production needs. That piggy-back relationship faded as IBM's chip business died. So it is not that unusual to see it struggle technologically today. However, it maybe good enough for the slightly lower end, with fewer and more _secure_ employees. Don't even try to innovate.

The initial DNA of TSMC consists of mainly engineers from US companies. They are often capable and ambitious, but couldn't move up for culture reasons. This old breed built up TSMC as it is now. But they are fading out as the US chip industry falls behind and has less and less to offer. TSMC's biggest risk, however, is being hit in a shooting war.

I don't know much about Samsung. It had a remarkable transition from memories to the foundry business. Due to culture reasons, however, I don't think they can, or even care to, have a lot of foundry customers.

@1qvv+1d69Y2cV: this is just a question.

If you do not think INTC has had talents, which companies you think have the talents and are successful?

“Those engineers don’t work hard like TSMC and Samsung.” Some of the VPs at TSMC now were at the core of Intel.

With the on-boarding of outside folks at higher positions who only know Synopsys and Cadence tools & the layoffs of 2016 shook core engineers at intel... That ki---d innovation drive at intel .

Agree Intel got lucky with x86 selection versus Z80 or 6800, or it would be Zilog or Motorola we’d be talking about.

The Andy and CRB days were a special time and TMG and PTD has some leaders, but now we got Pat who may have been trained at Andy’s feet but not anywhere close to Andy or CRB level talent, nor is anyone in TMG or LTD close to the vision or talent to lead them back to leadership. Lots of big talk everything promised will be late and underwhelming.

Sure with government funding and $$$$$$$$$$ they will limp back to not being 4 years behind, but the leader like they once were, never going to happen. Those Americans are lazy and don’t work hard like those at Samsung or TSMC, even the second generation ones and they cost far more.

The Apples, Googles, Amazon, AMD and others will have leadership silicon and leverage foundry scale that will force Intel to choose to use foundry and as their higher cost fabs can’t compete, simply a problem that will require them to discard their sad underperforming fabs.

Maybe with government subsidies and such Intel can limp along for a few years, but like IBM and everyone else, when you need leading edge silicon, it won’t be Intel inside, LOL
