Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I hope for the best, I expect the worst

At my age, it’s not exactly easy to start from scratch. That is the only reason why I am still here and I hope that I will keep my job for some time, that is, that I will stick around until retirement. However, I am starting to think about plan B more and more, because Verizon has no mercy and does not care that someone has little left until retirement.
How much longer is it worth staying, and when would you still recommend looking for a new job for people approaching retirement?

Always be looking. You may find a great opportunity or get told about one that pays better and has better benefits to you than VZ.
Of course if it doesnt go well for various reasons you might find it best to ride it out here into the ground then you can try to get a retirement job just for medical benefits till medicare. That unfortunately is my plan currently.

Three years from retirement. 1 day after turning 55, I'm being let go. Nuff said.

They will definitely put you on the chopping block if you are near retirement age, so just keep that in mind. People always think, "oh it won't happen to me". Well, I thought that too, but it did. So stay and keep your good job and benefits for now and maybe you'll ride it out. But just make sure you plan for tomorrow, because it could happen any day. Hopefully it won't, but just make sure you are ready financially if/when it does.

I would keep my resume updated and go on interviews always keeping your options open because they have 0 interest in you or how long you've worked for them. I doubt your getting a pension anyway. They dont pay medical and last i heard they only pay 25 percent of your mobile which makes it still more expensive than the competitors. So basically you have no ties to them and they have no ties to you. Why not work somewhere your happy and appreciated.
