Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Volunteer as tribute?

I am disillusioned with the company and looking for other jobs. Was considering though sticking around til next cycle to volunteer as PIP tribute to get the PIL and take one for the team. While I don’t think anyone’s safe anymore, I’m historically top 3rd so I think I will need to tank it to drop that low or communicate that I volunteer as tribute upline however indirectly.

  • Has anyone done this?
  • What is the risk of being fired or the company considering this some sort of resignation?
  • Specific things not to do or say?
  • Is there any future employment risk for other companies this maneuver besides not getting a great reference which XOM declines to do anyways?

@OP it's encouraging that I found someone who thought the same as me... thank you for posting.

I didn't do badly in the past 2 rankings but there's no longer possibility of my support function growth in my location and we are buffer stock before the MSPs get stable. It won't be hard for me to find a job so I thought I'll volunteer for PIP next year to save some of my friends who have a brighter future in the GBCs

there's more of us out here... I'll follow this thread for any practical advice. If any manager reads this and want to offer what @ygt+1dDKAqw3 's did, please do!

Human beings are hard wire to scan the horizon for danger and threats. Suggest you don’t succumb imagining scenarios that may or not happen. Like anything in life, the current situation will eventually pass. Stay present and control what you can control. Do your best to be kind to yourself and others who may be struggling. If you think you will be happier elsewhere then by all means, take that leap.

I know someone who did this last year, they were planning to leave for other reasons already and got a few months’ extra pay out of it. It can happen but only in very specific cases and highly dependent on who your boss is.

I had a manager explicitly make this offer in a meeting. He said that if you want to leave, let me know and you’ll get a little extra money while I can save one of your colleagues in the process. I would trust his word but mileage will vary widely based on who’s in charge.

That’s a long time to wait, just to maybe get a PIP/PIL. Job market is hot right now, so planning to leave more immediately on your own terms seems like a safer bet for better opportunities. Good luck!

Don’t turn in a PDS.

If you continually ranked high previously it’s going to take a few years to drop to PIP without it being obvious. They can talk all they’d like about being able to drop/rise significantly in one year, but at the end of the day ranking is done by people who have bias. Even if you don’t accomplish much this year, they’ll cover for an employee who has historically been competent. They can’t technically say based on previous years, but they can just talk up bogus PDS points and make something seem larger than it is. You can only really get away with it for a year or two though.

Don’t do it. While you think you are being altruistic, it does not matter to the company. They have a target percentage to fill and you cannot save anybody by volunteering yourself. Find your next job and resign on your own terms.

You don’t have to do anything special to get dropped in ranking. Just continue to age and work harder, not socializing as much. The ranking system is not a fair system and needs to be fixed!

You are wasting your time in this pathetic place. UIS is the worst but then downstream and Chemical are no good either.

Just leave it da---t (for your own sanity and a better future of your children).
