Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Executive Discrimination

Has anyone been the target of executive level discrimination?

How did you respond?

I had one executive tell me as a white male that I should expect to get passed over for promotions and stay in positions longer because I am a white male. I did not record the conversation, but made notes from the conversation after the fact.

I experienced a range of emotions from wanting to quit to ending my life since I cannot change my skin color. For those in similar situations, what did you do to cope?

If you didn't know what he was saying was true, you haven't been paying attention. Frankly it of what it is.

That said, I started at a new company that is very diverse, and it was one of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced. I'd rather be a subordinate there than at Exxon. Exxon treats workers like garbage. We're supposed to love it because we're paid "well." However, after leaving, I've received competitive offers. Then value of the pension was about one third the value of the 401k. People are tied to a pension that's really not that valuable. Take em offer for more money and invest it all.

XOM just isn't worth it

@1khn It’s never acceptable to discriminate against anybody. The g-y slur was uncalled for, and detracts from an otherwise valid point:

Someone has to have power in order to discriminate against somebody. In case you haven’t noticed, white men have almost all of the power in Corporate America, and therefore they’re the ones doing most of the discriminating based on race, gender, etc.

It’s rare, but not unheard of, for white men to be on the receiving end of racism (ask anyone working in tech), but it’s never on a systemic basis, and is nowhere near as frequent or pernicious as it is for, say, minority women.

It’s okay to discriminate against straight white guys these days. The false belief that this group has been overly favored is responsible.

You’ll have to identify as a ru-p ranger or similar to get some I&D points.

@1dkh+1dFnWbk8 Nicely stated. Thanks for posting. I wish we could get a cup of coffee to trade observations.

@1dkh I’m sorry that happened to you. There’s no excuse for it.

Keep in mind that a lot of men have no clue how to talk (or listen) to women in the workplace or anywhere else. Being a woman of color is hard. I hope you find a place where you’re valued.

Good luck.

I’m a minority female. A few years ago, I gave a presentation to the male top executive at the site where I was working at that time. Every single time he asked a question, he turned and addressed his question to my male colleague who was not even on the project (and was in the meeting to present on a different project after me). And he had several questions for me, all of which he chose to address to my male colleague. I left the company. The sad fact is one can rarely progress in this company, whether minority female or white male, without a sponsor. And those who do make it to the top, whether the very few female, minority, or far more numerous white men, tend to be incompetent and arrogant. For everyone else, consider leaving.

#snowflake.
Signed,
Brown guy who's been f**ked over continuously during his career.
p.s. maybe now since white boys feel the pain something might change

No need to yell admin. OP made a ridiculous post. So the backlash is expected.

Sad. Try to understand what it’s like to be a minority in corporate America before you post about “white male discrimination.”

They are using this as an excuse against you but they don’t actually like you.

What you described is just fact that you perceived as discrimination.

I have probably had situations in which my skin color was an enabler for success and other situations in which my skin color was a limiting factor.

I was once told a very similar story by my department manager. Was upset for a while but got over it.

I do the best I can in each situation and try to keep a good attitude.

Think of this: maybe you were chosen to be hired because of your color!

That’s an easy fix. Identify as a “they”, “them”, or one if the “new” genders to show how progressive you have become. Better yet, identify as a goo gobbler and get those “g-y” points locked in too.

If you have provable facts (witnesses)..Report to HR. This is the easiest way to derail the career of an "bad" executive. Many executives have been forced out over the years for bad behavior. I can think of at least 3 - CL 35 or higher forced out.

@OP you’re such a troll. Such a victim… A senior leader or even co-work who would say that out loud (even if they think it) is a idi*t as well. If it did happen and you did not challenge that allegation at a higher level to seek the equally you’ve been cheated out of, you’re also a weak minded fool. Some people get more opportunity true, but if you were as good as you think you are, you’d be something else, note an internet TROLL! You should be PIPed even in a 2% world, let alone 8%. As a WM, you’re the reason I am embarrassed as a hardworking professional at ANY company in ANY industry.

Musk agree.
No matter how many Johnny Walker Blue seltzer with limes I've had, I would never reveal the nature of the company's elevation policies.
OK. It's eye color.
I've said it.
Freckles a plus.
Enough.

No executive in their right mind would have ever said that, not even in confidence.

Funny you post this. I was having a conversation with someone last week that was a non-white male who was explicitly told (by senior exec) that women and POC were on different promotion plan. No details behind what “different promotion plan” means, but one can make assumptions.

A couple years ago, I was installing some air monitor equipment in Irving (I'm an IH).
Nice mahogany meeting room but had a 'smell' problem.
A top executive walks into the room (I assume a meeting was scheduled) and spots me placing a monitor on a corner wall.
He exits for a moment, then returns with his personal secretary (they are not 'admins' up there) and says to her:
'Janice - ask the man what he is doing here.'

So don't take anything personal.

As troll-y as this comment reads, I have actually had a couple of managers and execs say more or less this same thing to me at various times over my 15+ yrs in EM. It is not a new thing, just something that has been slowly building for years. It is what it is. I’m not whining as a white guy and I get the societal irony. But- the answer to bias is not more bias….. all of the doubling down on affinity politics and favoritism will change things but will not make things better….

If you fail to get ahead when things are in your favor for so long. Then it is your own fault. Now that the ball is passed on and the entitlement you had before is gone.

BTW there still a healthy white male at the board of directors. It is pretty much your fault that you are not up there!

You can move to Canada and work for Exxon's majority owned subsidiary, Imperial Oil. No issues with discrimination against caucasians, although
Caucasian females fare much better. Africans, East Asians, South East Asians - are screwed.

Stop whining. African Americans and Asians have been discriminated for a longer time and have a glass ceiling placed on them, but you don’t see them storming to a layoff board to whine. Now get back to work so we are winning!
