Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Everyone should be making a plan

AT&T doesn’t have much of a choice but to find ways to shrink the number of longterm employees. Employees with many years of service are just too expensive to maintain given the massive debt load. I’m fully expecting additional efforts next year. Everyone should be making a plan.

Bumped from @2bwf+1dtaB8ZI, 100% correct.

I planned on sleeping for most of this morning. Resounding success.
After lunch I plan on throwing some overtime into my afternoon nap.

I have always said anyone working for a large corporation should always have an exit strategy in place at all times. Nothing is guaranteed

Quit blaming me. I am up early everyday pushing dirt on my bulldozer in Enis TX. I am set for life, but I earned it. They will have to pry my cold dead hands off the steering of my beautiful bulldozer.

I loaded up on Cisco certifications and a state low voltage license. I work weekends for a building automation help desk. All of my debts are paid. Just enjoying the show, everyone around me seems mostly concerned about deck chair placement and what ever jibberish is being played for them on social media. And, of course, the relentless programming on channel C19.

Hmmm if fingers are to be pointed, don’t forget to give credit to Ed Whitacre who was at the helm of SBC and driving the railroad engine to ‘merge’ with the worn out, rundown ATT. Much criticism and name calling (juvenile behavior) is leveled at Stephenson and Stankey, but the real culprits are those old dudes who crafted the ‘merger’ and then walked away with platinum parachutes….specifically Ed Whitacre.

Looking at the latest earnings, I see 214,840 employees Sept 30th,2021 and 234,630 employees as of Sept 30th, 2020. This is an 8.4% reductions.

How bad have layoffs been in the last year? They haven't been bad at all. Between people taking offers, and normal attrition, the headcount objectives are being reached.

I see more of the same in 2022. The only way I see a big change is if they can start mothballing the copper plant. If not, headcount will continue to fizzle like it has been doing.

This isn’t an AT&T-specific issue. In today’s corporate world, how is anyone not aware he or she should be making a plan??? There are so many victims on this board! If you put all of your eggs in one basket, you can’t be surprised when you lose.

There were a lot of things announced by the Ratty in 2014-15. Among them was are new focus on becoming media powerhouse, as telecom was not important anymore. See how well that worked out with $100B of debt?

Remember, if their mouths are moving, they are lying. If their mouths are not moving, they are thinking of their next lie.

Sure, the Stink would like to be rid of every single US based employee he could, well except for himself.

Adding perspective here…it’s an erroneous assumption that ATT cannot find college graduates for technical positions. There are a myriad of positions that are ‘technical’ as well as technology based that require a college degree, and T continues to hire for these careers. Keep in mind that a considerable number of us did not hire on with ‘the phone company’ as techs, call center reps, billing clerks, retail sellers, service reps, etc. A lot of those jobs have been reduced or eliminated over the past 10+ years.
Another point…I believe it was in 2014-2015 that the company announced during an all hands on deck conference call their intention to reduce headcount by 40%. (!) So if you were employed back then you will recall that we were given notice that major headcount reductions were imminent. The fact is, there are few companies today that want to support workforces over 300k…
Not criticizing anyone’s point of view, but sometimes people conveniently leave out facts.

Stankey has a plan to pocket over $22 million this year by pushing thousands of employees overboard!!

I couldn’t agree more. The company is purposely shrinking as a result of debt, too many outstanding shares of stock and poor overall performance.
A lot of employees seem to think that by getting rid of older employees it would create a path for themselves to be promoted or have more job security. This will not happen. The company will provide you with more work at the same pay while automating as much of the company as possible.
Everyone should make a plan because 2022 will be worse than 2021.

And T cannot attract any college grads into tech positions because of Toxic T environment that the Stink created and underpaying employees.

So eventually T will be renamed to "India Telephone and Telegraph" once the majority of employees are over there. Send Stink there!
