Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Just laid off

Literally sobbing. After being told I was so valued by TR, I receive notice that I am being terminated. My position will be back filled via Change Pgm outsourcing. There will be no severance for my team.

Worked my a-s off for this company over the last 12 years and I’m treated horribly in return.

Whether you can receive unemployment benefits at the same time that you are receiving severance pay does depend on the state that you were working in and the amount of money you were making. I worked for TR in NYS and was let go at the end of 2018. I didn't receive unemployment benefits until after my bi-weekly severance pay ran out because the severance pay amount put me above the NYS threshold for receiving unemployment benefits at the same time.

For NYS severance pay Q&A, see https://dol.ny.gov/dismissalseverance-pay-and-pensions-frequently-asked-questions.

@2xzu+1dK52HUc Funny you mentioned Survivor: BPec is a silent producer of that reality show. He's just extending and wielding his showrunning mastery. TR employees are nothing but puppets and players in his reality, imagined or otherwise, world.

I was a Regional Manager (sales and account management) at TR and I can tell you organizational structure is determined in August, rolled out in September, and effected employees are notified in November the first or second of November. It’s like forking clockwork. Every year.

I was “displaced” after 13-years. 26-weeks if severance. (Two weeks for every year of service). I applied for other internal positions but the unspoken rule is do not give any preference to “displaced” or former TR employees.

Think of working at TR like Survivor. Every year, sometimes 2 or 3 times every year, dozens of people get voted off the island. Every, Forking. Year. My advice to anyone working at TR or looking to work at TR: keep your resume current, keep a file of every e-mail where your performance is acknowledged, and develop a network of recruiters. One last thing: do not get comfortable. My biggest career mistake was happy and content in my job. That gets you nothing in the long run.

Sorry to hear. I hope you find something better soon. May I ask which team you were part off?

Is MM still swanning around with his beak up a senior's backside or did he get let go too?

"There will be no severance for my team."
Which business units are NOT paying severance for FTE salaried employees?

I am so very sorry.

I thought you always get severance. Did they say why not?

On the question of receiving both severance and unemployment, check with your state's unemployment authority. I worked in the Hoboken NJ office and my severance was paid every two weeks rather than lump sum. I also applied for unemployment--figured I had nothing to lose, really wasn't expecting to get anything--but I got 6 months unemployment at the same time that I was receiving the severance. I told NJ about the severance when I applied for the unemployment and they still paid it. So you might not need to wait until any severance runs out before qualifying for unemployment, but the rules might vary by state.

So sorry to hear. So sad how you have been treated. I’d see an employment lawyer about the severance before signing anything. You deserve something.

OP isn’t getting severance so unemployment should be fine.
If you get severance, it depends on how it’s paid out. If it’s a lump sum, you can apply for unemployment. TR paid severance for me like a salary ( so every 2 weeks). You can’t qualify for unemployment until that’s over.

@OP+1dK52HUc I am so sorry this has happened to you. Is it that your team are contractors and not employees? Is that why they're not getting severance?

Can one collect severance and unemployment at the same time or do you have to wait until severance runs out?

That’s awful. Are you going to get bonus? They shouldn’t fight unemployment so apply as soon as you can.

Severance is at the discretion of manager per each position. Severance not guaranteed or required.

Also, new restrictions on severance instituted a few months back.

Sorry for your distress. But believe that you will find something far better. Caring about employees is only lip-service at TR.
